It has been roughly over three months since the iPhone 16 (review) came out, and we’re already hearing rumors about the purported iPhone 17 series. The latest update comes from the microblogging platform Weibo, wherein a post from a tipster talks about the presence of a high refresh rate display on the regular iPhone 17.

iPhone 17 Could Ditch The 60Hz Refresh Rate Display

Apple iPhone 16 Review with Pros Cons & verdict - Smartprix.com-17

According to renowned Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, the standard iPhone 17 will likely “have a higher refresh rate.” For those who’ve been following the iPhone releases over the years, getting a higher refresh rate on the non-Pro iPhones has been among the most echoed demand among customers.

However, it’s worth paying attention that the tipster didn’t mention the exact refresh rate he expects the iPhone 17 to feature. Currently, the non-Pro models support a 60Hz refresh rate, while the Pro models support a variable refresh rate (thanks to LTPO technology) that can go up to 120Hz and down to 1Hz.

ProMotion Display On The iPhone 17 Makes Sense

Given that Apple already uses the technology on its Pro models, it would make sense for the company to implement it on the regular iPhones. While 120Hz results in a smoother, more immersive smartphone experience, 1Hz facilitates the always-on functionality of the Pro iPhone models.

If the iPhone 17 models get an LTPO display, they’ll get both features together. This will bring the baseline iPhone on par with other latest flagships, which sport a 120Hz variable refresh rate display. In the past, Ross Young has also claimed the presence of a ProMotion display on the regular iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Air.

While the claims are exciting, they also point toward the possibility of the baseline iPhone 17 getting a little more expensive (than what it is already). Since ProMotion displays cost more, we’re eager to see whether Apple passes on the cost to the consumers or not.
