The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has been shipping globally, India included, since its Unpacked debut in July. Apple’s foldable remains unannounced, with credible reporting split between a September reveal alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series and a delayed, iPhone X-style rollout that could push retail availability closer to October, and possibly limit the first wave of stock to the US market alone.

Right off the bat, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the iPhone Ultra are two very different foldables. While the former follows the traditional tall-body, narrow cover-screen design (like previous Samsung foldables), the latter uses a newer form factor that looks and feels like the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 (a passport-like form factor).
Given that it’s a first-generation device, the iPhone Ultra could be relatively thicker than the Fold 8 Ultra (Samsung’s eighth iteration), and I think that’s absolutely fine. The iPhone is rumored to ship with a titanium + aluminum frame, ultra-thin glass protection on the front, and a liquid metal hinge with a crease depth of less than 0.15mm. If true, these things should bolster the long-term durability, which, if you ask me, is quite important for a first-generation foldable.

However, these are still rumors. The Samsung Z Fold 8 Ultra already ships with an aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on the back, and a Flex Titanium display, and it’s already considered one of the most durable book-style foldables on the market. There’s one thing that Apple can clearly improve upon, though, and that’s the Fold 8 Ultra’s IP48 rating.
Like the Fold 8 Ultra, the iPhone Ultra could also ship with a fingerprint scanner (what Apple calls Touch ID). Moreover, it looks like the iPhone Ultra will be fundamentally different from Samsung’s foldable, but it will surely command an even more premium price.

As mentioned earlier, the iPhone Ultra could feature a different form factor than the Fold 8 Ultra, and that means it will come with different screen sizes. Compared with the Fold 8 Ultra’s tall 6.5-inch display, the iPhone Ultra could feature a 5.5-inch cover display (smaller but wider). Similarly, its inner screen could be smaller: ~7.6-7.8 inches (similar to the Fold 8’s form factor) and based on a completely different aspect ratio.

Like the Fold 8 Ultra, the iPhone Ultra could get a 120Hz refresh rate on both the cover and inner screen, because otherwise it would be hard to defend the premium pricing. Speaking of the display, the crease on the iPhone could be as visible as, or slightly less visible than, the Fold 8 Ultra.
Although no rumors mention the foldable iPhone’s peak brightness, it should at least match the iPhone 17 Pro series.

The current-generation Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy (3nm) chipset, which is a slightly overclocked version of the regular chipset. It is currently the fastest chip Qualcomm manufactures (until its successor arrives in a couple of months). So, whether it’s video games, video editing, or heavy multitasking, the Fold 8 Ultra can handle everything.

Apple’s iPhone Ultra, on the other hand, could use the in-house A20 Pro (2nm). A recent rumor claims the chip is around 18% faster than the A19 Pro, which was itself faster than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in single-core workloads. For users, this shouldn’t be a tangible difference unless you’re timing the seconds it takes the phone to render a video or edit a picture.
We also expect the Fold 8 Ultra to provide top-tier gaming performance. The Cupertino giant is also rumored to use vapor chamber cooling in the handset to maintain optimal operating temperature and limit thermal throttling, which is common in slim form factors. The Fold 8 Ultra features 12GB of RAM on the lower variants, with up to 16GB on the top-tier variant, but the iPhone Ultra might come with 12GB of RAM standard across all.

Out of the box, the Fold 8 Ultra runs on One UI 9, which is Samsung’s custom UI based on Android 17. It is also the first phone (in general) to get Android 17. Key software features include a three-app split-screen experience designed specifically for the Fold, contextual suggestions and summary features like Now Nudge and Now Brief, and the full suite of Galaxy AI features with Gemini Intelligence task automation.
You also get a customizable quick settings menu, separate controls for the volume slider and mute switch, a redesigned media player with colorful waveform animation, new shortcuts via Good Lock, and other intuitive features like My FanCam and Flex Mode. And yes, the entire software experience is backed by seven years of operating system and security updates.
The iPhone Ultra, if it debuts with the iPhone 18 Pro series, will most likely run on iOS 27, which unlocks the Siri AI experience on compatible iPhones. To leverage the screen size, the foldable iPhone could also ship with a dedicated side-by-side app multitasking feature. iOS should also dynamically shift app layouts when the phone is partially folded.
Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 brings several brand-new AI capabilities across the system, highlighted by a deeply integrated, conversational Siri AI assistant; new AI-powered photo editing tools like Extend, Reframe, and an enhanced Clean Up function. There’s a new Siri camera mode that performs real-time visual searches straight from the viewfinder.

Cameras could be one aspect where the Fold 8 Ultra beats the iPhone Ultra entirely. We already have a three-camera setup on the Samsung Fold, including a dedicated telephoto sensor.
Though it’s the smallest telephoto sensor out there and Samsung should seriously consider removing it from its portfolio and replacing it with a slightly larger sensor for a better low-light experience, it could still be a major selling point for people who like capturing portraits or simply want a better camera system.

Regarding the iPhone Ultra’s camera system, it could be very similar to the one we get on the current-generation iPhone 17, unless Apple surprises everyone with a telephoto camera (either replacing the ultrawide sensor or coming in as the third sensor).

To fit in a 5,000 mAh battery in a thin chassis, Samsung had to embrace silicon-carbon battery technology, something that Chinese manufacturers have been doing for a long time. With mixed usage, the phone offers around seven to eight hours of screen-on time (something we’ve mentioned in our review). Charging is limited to 45W wired and 20W wireless (though the phone lacks built-in magnetics).
The iPhone Ultra, on the other hand, could feature the largest battery ever in an iPhone. There’s no consensus among the industry sources yet, but the phone could sport a 5,000 to 5,500 mAh battery, and might beat the Fold 8 Ultra and the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series for that matter. Charging speed could be limited to around 40W, as Apple prefers long-term usability over instant charging speed.
Whether the foldable will feature MagSafe wireless charging is something we’re yet to find out.

This is perhaps the most important part of the comparison. Samsung’s Fold 8 Ultra is already available in India starting at ₹2 lakhs (excluding all offers). The iPhone Ultra, although it’s rumored to be a US-only device at launch, could be significantly more expensive than the Fold 8 Ultra in India. Here’s why.

The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 in the USA, which converts to about ₹1,06,000. However, its starting price in India is ₹1,34,900, which is about $1,410, or about 28% higher than the US pricing. Now, even if the iPhone Ultra starts at $2,000 in the US (the lowest possible launch price), the Indian price could be around $2,300, or about ₹2.20 lakhs (without offers).
If that happens, the iPhone Ultra will be the most expensive mainstream smartphone or foldable available in a price-sensitive country.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra vs. iPhone Fold / Ultra: Conclusion
While it looks like the iPhone Ultra could beat the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra in terms of raw performance, thanks to its advanced 2nm A20 Pro chip, other aspects are either a tie or a bit too inclined in favor of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. While display and software could be a tie, the iPhone Ultra could present a better built and battery life in front of buyers. Cameras, however, remain in favor of Samsung for now.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is a known quantity: excellent, if familiar, cameras, a mature hinge, and a price that Indian buyers can actually pay today. Apple’s foldable, on the other hand, is still built almost entirely out of analyst notes and supply-chain leaks, and every spec here could shift before the phone ever reaches a stage.

If Apple’s usual India markup holds, and it almost always does, the iPhone Fold could land closer to Rs 2.2 lakh or beyond, comfortably north of what the Fold 8 Ultra costs today. For a category that is still finding its footing with mainstream Indian buyers, that kind of pricing risks keeping the foldable iPhone a curiosity rather than a real alternative once it finally arrives.
