TL; DR
- Apple is once again rumored to be working on a major Apple Watch redesign for 2027.
- The refreshed model could introduce a new band attachment mechanism, potentially ending compatibility with existing straps.
- Reports also suggest Apple is exploring larger batteries, new health sensors, and next-generation display technology.
The Apple Watch has looked pretty much the same over the last few years. But maybe not anymore. Apple may be preparing its biggest Apple Watch update in years. A fresh leak from Weibo tipster Instant Digital claims that a substantially redesigned Apple Watch is currently in development and could debut next year.
Existing Apple Watch Bands May Not Work

According to the leak, Apple is considering replacing the current band locking mechanism with an entirely new system.
The company has used the same attachment method since the first Apple Watch launched over a decade ago, allowing bands to remain compatible across multiple generations. The rumored redesign may finally break that continuity.
The change is reportedly aimed at reclaiming internal space inside the watch chassis. Additional room could allow Apple to fit a larger battery or introduce new hardware components without significantly increasing the size of the watch.
As a result, users upgrading to the redesigned model may need to purchase new bands.
A Delayed Redesign?

Interestingly, rumors surrounding a dramatic Apple Watch overhaul aren’t new. Back in 2023, reports suggested Apple was developing an anniversary model, often referred to as the “Apple Watch X.” That device was rumored to feature a thinner body, a magnetic strap mechanism, and display upgrades. Those changes never arrived, with Apple instead launching the Series 10 with a familiar design.
The latest report suggests that Apple may have simply pushed those plans further down the roadmap.
More Than Just a Cosmetic Refresh

The redesign could extend beyond the exterior. Industry reports over the past year have suggested Apple is experimenting with several new technologies for future Apple Watch models, including:
- Advanced OLED display technology with improved efficiency
- Additional health sensors on the underside of the watch
- A redesigned internal layout to accommodate larger batteries
- New materials and a thinner chassis
Some reports have even mentioned sensor arrangements positioned in a ring pattern on the rear housing, highlighting Apple’s continued focus on health tracking.
No Major Changes Expected This Year

Before the redesign arrives, Apple is expected to unveil the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 later this year. Current rumors suggest both models will retain the existing design introduced with the Series 10, with upgrades focusing primarily on internals and health features.
As always, these details are based on early supply-chain and industry reports, so plans could still change before the product reaches the market.
