Amazon today launched its entry-grade Show device, the Echo Show 5, where the number 5 is a pointer to its rectangular 5.5-inch screen size and not the generation. So, yes, the Echo Show 5 is a lot smaller than 10-inch second generation Echo Show, but it’s the cheapest Echo device with a screen that you can buy in India as of today, and that matters.

Echo Show 5 Price in India and availability

Exactly how cheap are we talking here? In India, the Echo Show 5 will retail for Rs. 8,999, which is a good 4k cheaper than even the 2.5-inch Echo Spot that launched last year. It will be available in Black and White color options and you can pre-order one today on Amazon but the Echo Show 5 will only start shipping in July.

Echo Show 5 Features: Enhanced Privacy and Smart Home

First off, Amazon is bringing in some advanced privacy enhancements with Show 5. There is a dedicated hardware button to electrically disconnect camera and microphone on the new Show, and you can now just say “Delete everything  I said today” to Alexa and get rid of the entire days’ conversation.

The 5.5-inch screen has 960 X 480-pixel resolution, which doesn’t sound ideal for consuming multimedia content – just in case you had that in mind. The screen can, however, show a handy dashboard to control and monitor all your connected devices, something Google also recently announced for its Nest hub. The idea here is to make Smart Home more accessible and more efficient. Amazon is also bringing in WikiHow support so users may get simple answers and tutorials to common life problems.

The Echo Show 5 has auto-screen brightness support and, of course, all regular Alexa commands and skills will work on Echo Show 5 too. Since this one has a screen, the drop-in feature, where your friends and family could just show up on the screen for an announcement, will work too.
