TL;DR
  • Apple has launched a redesigned MacBook Pro with a touch screen.
  • For almost twenty years, Apple resisted this move, but now calls it a major step forward for the Mac.
  • The new model introduces Apple’s first OLED Mac display, adds Dynamic Island, and brings back the glowing Apple logo.
  • In India, prices start at ₹3,49,900.

The new touchscreen MacBook Pro comes in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, powered by M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. In India, the 14-inch M5 Pro starts at ₹3,49,900, while the 16-inch M5 Max tops out at ₹5,89,900. This is the first Mac with a touch display, OLED screen, and Dynamic Island.

Steve Jobs called touchscreen laptops ‘ergonomically terrible.’ Tim Cook compared a touch Mac to merging a fridge and a toaster. Now, Apple has shipped exactly that.

Design and Display: Apple’s First OLED Mac

The main upgrade is the screen. Apple calls it ProLED XDR. It’s a tandem OLED panel with up to 2,000 nits of brightness, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio. This is Apple’s first OLED Mac display and the first Mac with Dynamic Island, now supporting Live Activities in macOS. The glowing Apple logo on the lid returns.

The new MacBook Pro is thinner and lighter. The 16-inch model is 0.63 inches thick, down from 0.66, and weighs 4 pounds, down from 4.7. The 14-inch version weighs 3 pounds.

Chips: M5 Pro and M5 Max, Not M6

Apple’s other new MacBook Pro and iMac models use the M6 chip. The touchscreen MacBook Pro runs on M5 Pro or M5 Max instead. Apple’s first touch Mac does not launch with the latest chip.

Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours. The laptop includes MagSafe 3, a headphone jack, SD card reader, HDMI, and three Thunderbolt 5 ports. It supports up to three external displays, or four with the M5 Max. The six-speaker sound system now delivers 50 percent deeper bass.

Why Apple Changed Its Mind on Touch

For years, Apple stuck to its no-touchscreen rule for Macs. Jobs dismissed the idea. Cook repeated the fridge-and-toaster comparison whenever someone asked about merging the Mac and iPad.

About four years ago, that stance started to change. Cook and new CEO John Ternus began pushing for touch on the MacBook Pro. Apple hardware chief Johny Srouji called the result a monumental step forward for the Mac.

The touch MacBook Pro arrives in the same week as Apple’s M6 MacBook Pro and iMac refresh, plus an overhauled OLED iPad mini. This is one of Apple’s busiest hardware weeks of the year.
