TL; DR
  • Premium Lite will cost ₹89 per month, making ad-free video viewing more affordable.
  • It will remove ads from most videos but keep them in Shorts, music content, searches, and browsing.
  • It will skip offline downloads and background playback, serving as a cheaper, lighter option for casual viewers.

YouTube has officially expanded its Premium Lite subscription to India, introducing a low-cost way for viewers to reduce ad interruptions. Priced at ₹89 per month, the plan will target casual users who want uninterrupted playback without paying for the full suite of Premium features.

What Premium Lite Will Offer

Premium Lite will deliver ad-free viewing for most videos across devices, including smartphones, laptops, and smart TVs. However, Premium Lite will not remove ads everywhere. Users will still encounter ads in YouTube Shorts, music content, searches, and general browsing. The plan will also exclude offline downloads and background audio playback, two of the most popular features in the standard Premium plan.

  • Ad-free playback across all content types
  • YouTube Music integration for uninterrupted music streaming
  • Offline downloads for videos
  • Background playback for listening even when the screen is off

Availability and Market Strategy

The rollout of Premium Lite in India will begin today, with full availability expected over the next few weeks. YouTube currently boasts more than 125 million global subscribers across its paid services, and the Lite plan will aim to accelerate adoption in India. However, the Student plan already gives you access to the full premium features for a similar price. Even the family plan costs ₹50 per head.
