TL; DR
  • Leaker Digital Chat Station says Xiaomi’s magnetic modular lens system has entered mass production planning, with a possible appearance in 2026.
  • The detachable module uses a custom Micro Four Thirds (M4/3) sensor, roughly 100 MP, paired with a 35 mm f/1.4 lens and connects magnetically to compatible phones.
  • Data transfers via Xiaomi’s LaserLink system, allowing the phone’s ISP and AI processing to handle images captured by the large external sensor.

Xiaomi’s previously showcased magnetic modular lens system may finally move closer to consumers. According to a new post from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the detachable lens module has now entered mass production planning. The leaker states that the project has begun preparations for volume manufacturing, with the earliest possible availability expected sometime in 2026, though no fixed timeline is confirmed.

This system traces back to Xiaomi’s Modular Optical System prototype shown at MWC 2025. At the time, Xiaomi presented it as a concept rather than a confirmed product. The prototype featured a magnetically attached camera module that snaps onto the back of a compatible phone using a Qi2-style magnetic ring.

Instead of a typical smartphone sensor, the module houses a custom Micro Four Thirds sensor, significantly larger than 1-inch smartphone sensors, paired with a 35 mm equivalent f/1.4 lens adjustable up to f/11.

Xiaomi designed the module to communicate with the phone using its proprietary LaserLink technology. This high-speed optical connection allows data transfer at up to 10 Gbps, enabling the phone’s image signal processor and AI algorithms to handle noise reduction, HDR, sharpening, and other computational photography tasks. The goal is to combine the image quality of a large sensor and proper optics with the convenience and processing power of a smartphone.

When Xiaomi first revealed the concept, the company cited challenges around cost, durability, and water resistance, particularly due to exposed connection points. The new leak suggests those issues may now be resolved well enough to justify moving toward mass production.

There is still no confirmation on which phones will support the module. Speculation points to future flagship models or a revived MIX-series device that would include built-in magnetic support and LaserLink compatibility. Pricing, regional availability, and whether additional lenses will be offered remain unknown.

If Xiaomi actually follows through, this could become the first modular camera system of this scale to reach commercial release, reviving an idea that many have explored but never fully shipped. More concrete details are expected to surface as 2026 approaches.
