Xiaomi is currently one of the leading brands in the smartphone and home appliances segment. The China-based brand offers a good blend of features and affordability and has thus made its place among the top 5 leading brands across the globe, the other 4 being Apple, Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo. Now, Xiaomi has been wanting to give a tough fight to Elon Musk’s Tesla by becoming a stiff competitor in the EV industry. The brand has been working on its first EV for a while now and the date for the unveiling of Xiaomi’s EV tech has also been confirmed.

Xiaomi’s official handle took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that Xiaomi will showcase its EV technology on December 28, 2023, at 11:30 AM IST. The company is calling it ‘The Stride’ event wherein EV technology will be shown off but no actual products will be launched. The poster shows a chassis of a car with the word ‘STRIDE’ written on it. Here is the post announcing the event.

Xiaomi EV: What has gone behind it?

In March 2021, Xiaomi announced that it will invest 10 times more than all its competitors in the EV space to make quality smart electric vehicles. The company received state approval to make EVs in August 2021 and in November 2021, BAIC group claimed that they will be working on Xiaomi’s first cars.

Xiaomi’s founder Lei Jun talked about foraying into the EV space quite a few times. He claimed that Xiaomi has given a 10 billion RMB budget and 3400 engineers to perfect its prototype. Talking about the kind of EVs Xiaomi aims to make, he said that the company is hoping to combine elements of traditional automobiles and consumer electronics industries to make perfect EVs. At times while he has accepted that Xiaomi’s EVs might not get the desired traction in the Chinese market, other times he has been worried that the company might not be able to keep up with the demand leading to a two-year wait time for consumers. If that isn’t being super confident about one’s product, what is?

Xiaomi EV: Expectations

Since Xiaomi has been working on its EV for years, there have been various leaks and rumors regarding the same. Recently, some leaked renders of the EV showed a central control display and a 3-spoke steering wheel in the car. The measurements of the car are expected to be 4997/1963/1455 mm with a 3000mm wheelbase for spacious interiors. There might be 2 wheel options and LiDAR tech for advanced windshields. Two versions of the EV might be all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive offering 449KW and 229KW respectively. The EV is claimed to use an effective LFP battery pack and the series will have 3 models namely Xiaomi SU7, Xiaomi SU7 Pro, and Xiaomi SU Max. Battery capacity options might be 73.6kWh and 101kWh with a battery life of 668/628km and 800/750km respectively.

During the event on the 28th, Xiaomi might reveal details about car engines, driving features, AI capabilities, color options, and more. The company is planning to mass produce the EV soon so that it becomes available to the public in 2024.

Meanwhile, stay tuned to this space to get all the updates from the ‘Stride’ event happening on December 28.
