Upgraded Main Sensor
Sony and Xiaomi have forged several camera partnerships over the years, and the most notable result was the Sony IMX989, the first 1-inch type sensor. Now, both companies are collaborating to upgrade the Sony LYT-900 sensor. This new sensor will bring several improvements over the current LYT-900 sensor found in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. With this new Sensor, Xiaomi is expecting to achieve better low-light performance.
4K Cinematic and Slow-Motion Modes
One of the most exciting upgrades on the Xiaomi 15 Ultra will be introducing a dedicated 4K Cinematic video mode. Cinematic mode was introduced on the previous-generation Ultra phone but was limited to 1080p capture.
A similar upgrade is being given to the Slow-Motion mode. Xiaomi’s new imaging chip and the ISP upgrades that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will deliver will primarily make this possible.

New 200MP Telephoto camera with 10X Space Zoom
With the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, we will also see an updated camera app featuring a dedicated toggle for 10x zoom. Currently, on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, we only have 5 zoom toggles, ranging from 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3.2x, and 5x. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra will add a sixth 10x toggle. It will primarily be achieved through the new 200MP telephoto camera. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s 10x lossless zoom, achieved through a combination of a telephoto sensor and in-sensor zoom technology, will be similar to that of the vivo X100 Pro (review) and vivo X100 Ultra.
We’ve seen a version of this 200MP telephoto lens on the Vivo X100 Ultra, which delivers exceptional shots and is currently a fan favorite in China.

Possibly a New Selfie Camera
Lastly, Xiaomi plans to add an upgraded selfie camera on the 15 Ultra. Traditionally, Xiaomi has struggled to deliver an exceptional selfie experience compared to their Korean and American counterparts. Xiaomi is aiming to break this trend, and we might see a larger 50MP selfie camera on the Xiaomi 15 Ultra compared to the 32MP snapper on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.
Additional Features
Apart from all these camera upgrades, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra will be powered by the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC, come with a 2K quad-curved display, a larger battery, and sport a ceramic and faux leather finish on the rear.
Xiaomi 15 Ultra Launch Date
Lastly, the phone is set to launch in China in first two months of 2025, and we will probably learn more about it as the launch approaches.
