With iOS 17, Apple introduced a lesser-known feature called Screen Distance. Since viewing a screen too closely can increase eyestrain (and increase the risk of short-sightedness or myopia), the Screen Distance feature reminds users to move their phone away from their eyes.

If an iPhone is part of a Family Sharing Group, Screen Distance is enabled by default for children under 13. However, for adults who have an individual Apple account, the feature isn’t enabled out of the box, which is why we’ve compiled this article.

What Does The Screen Distance Feature Do?

Using the TrueDepth Camera system on an iPhone, Screen Distance detects when you’re holding your iPhone too close to your eyes, i.e., less than 30 cm away, for an extended period, and reminds you to move it further away. Moreover, the feature helps reduce eye strain in people of all ages. It is available on devices with a TrueDepth camera system or Face ID.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and select Screen Time.
  • Under the Limit Usage menu, select Screen Distance.
