The Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp keeps pushing out updates regularly. Most recently, it introduced the View Once privacy setting for voice messages, along with secret codes that help users protect sensitive chats. While these upgrades have already made their way to the Android and iOS versions of the platform, WhatsApp is now working to improve the web version.

During the last week, WhatsApp updates tracker WABetaInfo published several updates related to WhatsApp’s Web client. On December 26, 2023, the service extended its Status Update feature to its web version. Once the ability is available to everyone, web users should be able to share photos, videos, and text updates directly as their Status from their desktop or laptop.

WhatsApp Web Feature Under Development: Dark Mode For Web

On December 27, 2023, WABetaInfo reported how WhatsApp is working on a new dark mode for its web client. It is essentially a darker background color that puts less strain on the eyes and allows people to use the web version in poorly lit environments. Per the report, the new dark mode is currently under development. Hence, it is not available to many beta testers at the moment.

The publication writes in its report that the shift from “#111b20 to $12181c will introduce a subtle yet impactful shift, making the interface more visually pleasing and reducing strain on the eyes.” It is important to mention that WhatsApp already has excellent dark modes in place for Android and iOS devices.

Users Will Soon Be Able To Create Usernames On WhatsApp For Web

The messaging service is also working on the Create Username feature. Once it rolls out, users can create usernames directly from the app’s web version without disclosing their phone numbers. The username creation process should be similar to another Meta-owned platform like Instagram, where usernames work as unique identifiers. In the screenshot shared by the publication, we can see a “Your username” option right below the “Your name” option.

The publication also notes that users will be able to change their username at any time. Along with this feature, the platform is also working on enabling users to search for others with their usernames. In the screenshot shared with this report, we can see the text prompt read “Search name, number, or @username” in the search field on WhatsApp. However, these features are also under development.
