Samsung announced the Galaxy S24 series at the Galaxy Unpacked event held on January 17, 2024. During the event, the Korean giant revealed three smartphones, including the Galaxy S24, the Galaxy S24 Plus, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Of the three, the top-tier Galaxy S24 Ultra has a new cover material named “Corning Gorilla Armor.” Here are more details about what Gorilla Armor is and how durable it is compared to other materials.

Gorilla Armos Is A Type Of Gorilla Glass, But It’s More Durable

Last year, the Galaxy S23 Ultra shipped with the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on top and the back. However, this year, the S24 Ultra comes with Corning Armor. According to the official press release, the Gorilla Armor “demonstrated superior durability when compared against competitive aluminosilicate cover glasses.” Corning developed a new lab test called Scratch Bot to measure the material’s durability.

Here’s What Corning Says About The New Cover Material

In the launch event, Corning mentioned that the Gorilla Armor is its toughest Gorilla Glass ever. While the material is three times more durable, it is over four times more scratch-resistant than competitive aluminosilicate cover glasses. Last but not least, Corning claims that the Gorilla Armor reduces reflection by up to 75 percent, which improves the display readability.

Moreover, the Gorilla Armos is a slightly more durable form of the Gorilla Glass that we are used to seeing on flagship Android phones. However, digging deeper into the fine print, we discovered that the material “is incorporated into front display of Galaxy S24 Ultra.” The rear display, however, could still be the Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Besides the new material, the Galaxy S24 Ultra also has a Titanium frame and an IP68 water and dust-resistance rating.
