Design and Build

If you put both devices face up on a table, you will be confused to pick the right one. Both Vivo V9 and Oppo F7 come with all-display fascia with almost 90% screen-to-body ratio, iPhone X-like notch on top, and minimal bezel on the chin.

This similarity, however, doesn’t extend to their pack panel. The Vivo V9 sports top-corner aligned dual-camera at the back and a center-placed fingerprint sensor. Whereas the Oppo F7 has a single sensor on the top-corner and fingerprint sensor in the middle.

All in all, both Oppo F7 and Vivo V9 look classy and appealing. We would like to call this comparison a tie as both are almost a mirrod reflection to one another.

Display

There isn’t much to choose here from between Oppo F7 and Vivo V9. Both devices boast an equally competent 19:9 display with 90% screen-to-body aspect ratio, a notched screen and FHD+ resolution. The displays have good color contrast and dynamic range.

However, if you still looking for a winner then you may consider Vivo V9’s 6.3-inch display as an advantage over Oppo F7’s 6.23-inch display.

Performance and Software

It’s the innards that will ultimately decide the fate of both the devices. The Vivo V9 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 chipset whereas its arch-rival rocks AI-focused MediaTek Helio P60 mobile chipset, under its hood.

The MediaTek Helio P60 was recently announced in MWC 2018 and Oppo F7 is the first device to rock it. We have to wait for the review to see how the chipset will perform in real life. However, MediaTek claims the P60 to be 70% faster than its predecessor P30, clocked at a 2.0GHz frequency. Further, the chipset has NeuroPilot to carry out all the AI-related activities.

The Snapdragon 626 in Vivo V9, on the other hand, is slightly dated but still a decent chipset for mid-range phones. It is clocked at 2.2GHz frequency and has the capability to muscle through any task.

At the software front, both devices run on the Android Oreo-based software out of the box. Vivo and Oppo both use their own custom Funtouch and Color UIs, respectively, to add hefty features on their device. The selection here depends on your taste, but mind you the experience is far from stock-Android.

Camera and Battery

The Vivo V9 features a whopping 24-megapixel sensor on the front for selfies and a combination of the 16MP+5MP sensor on the rear. The extra-sensor on the back is to add depth-effect for portrait photos while the front camera comes with AI to enhance your photos and AR stickers.

In the similar context, Oppo’s selfie-centric phone, the F7, comes with a 25MP sensor on the front and a single 16MP camera at the back. Just like V9, Oppo F7 selfie camera is also assisted by AI to offer better selfies, and include other features like Group-selfie Beautification and AI-based 16 different scene recognition for better selfies.

As for the battery, the Vivo V9 is aided by 3260mAh battery which is comparable lesser to Oppo F7 3400mAh battery. Both batteries are non-removable and don’t support fast charging.

Verdict

It was indeed a close fight. Both devices have a lot in common. Both phones run Android 8.1 Oreo as base software, heavily emphasize on selfies, have Face Unlock, dedicated microSD card slot, and an immersive display.

What Works for Vivo V9?

  • Dual-rear cameras with portrait mode
  • more reliable Qualcomm chipset
  • More ergonomic

What Works for Oppo F7?

  • Bigger Battery
  • AI-powered chipset
  • Base variant is cheaper.
