In late 2023, Toyota provided a glimpse into its forthcoming midsize electric SUV with the unveiling of the Urban SUV concept. This concept signifies Toyota’s foray into the electric vehicle (EV) market in India, mirroring Maruti’s eVX. Scheduled to debut in March 2025, Maruti’s EV sets the stage for Toyota, with its iteration of the electric SUV slated to follow six months later. Anticipated to grace Indian showrooms by September-October 2025, the production version of the Urban SUV concept promises to be a pivotal addition to Toyota’s lineup, marking its maiden venture into the Indian EV landscape.
What To Expect
Toyota unveiled the Urban SUV concept, boasting dimensions of 4,300mm in length, 1,820mm in width, and 1,620mm in height. Notably, these measurements closely align with those of the Maruti eVX. Furthermore, both models are anticipated to share an identical 2,700mm wheelbase, indicating a harmonious synergy in their structural design and spatial configuration.
In terms of design, the Urban SUV concept exudes a striking resemblance to Toyota’s latest electric vehicle (EV) offerings, notably drawing inspiration from the bZ compact SUV concept. Characterized by sharp, edgy surfaces and adorned with C-shaped LED daytime running lamps upfront, the concept boasts a minimalist front bumper, exuding a contemporary allure. Flaunting flared wheel arches and a quintessential upright SUV silhouette, it emanates a rugged aesthetic, resonating with adventure-seeking enthusiasts.
Notably, its rear end shares notable similarities with the eVX, featuring familiar door and glass configurations, albeit with rear door handles ingeniously positioned on the C-pillar, enhancing its sleek and streamlined profile.
Although Toyota has yet to unveil the interior of the Urban SUV concept, it’s reasonable to anticipate significant commonality and parts sharing with the eVX in this regard. Leveraging its born-EV skateboard platform, the Urban SUV is poised to offer ample space and adaptability, aligning with the contemporary demands of electric vehicle design. Like its Maruti counterpart, enthusiasts can expect a luxurious interior replete with an extensive array of creature comforts, cutting-edge safety features, and advanced technology, elevating the driving experience to new heights of sophistication and convenience.
Powertrain
The Urban SUV by Toyota, akin to the eVX, will be built on the 27PL skateboard platform, a locally produced component manufactured at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant in India, serving both domestic and international markets. It will offer two battery options: a 60kWh unit delivering a range of approximately 550km, as demonstrated with the eVX concept, and a smaller 48kWh variant providing around 400km of range. Toyota has confirmed the availability of both front-wheel drive (FWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations to cater to different market demands and preferences.
