Back in December, Qualcomm announced it’s then newly unveiled Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 765 chips will feature GPU Driver updates via the Google Play Store. That’s something we were accustomed to on the PC. But, on the mobile device, it was anew and game-changer in some sense. Well, the chipmaker has officially revealed the list of contenders for this OTA push.

Here are they –

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 10 (review)
  • Samsung Galaxy S10 (review)
  • Google Pixel 4, Pixel 4XL

That’s it for now ಠ_ಠ

For what it’s worth, Qualcomm promises more devices will join the list “soon”.

Needless to point, you see all these aforementioned devices are from the Snapdragon 855 fam. So, the latest flock of phones are also in that ‘to-be-coming’ queue.

Nonetheless, it is a piece of reassuring news. Qualcomm also adds,
“Consumers will be able to update their Adreno GPU driver just like an app.” Good Grief!

Google Pixel 4XL

Moreover, we also got to know about the Android GPU Inspector tool. This is a
profiling tool that allows developers to keep a tab on the mobile GPU usage in games. Thereafter, the required improvements can be addressed. How much you ask? Qualcomm vaunts a 40% GPU utilization savings in an unnamed game tested on Pixel 4XL.

Lastly but importantly enough, Qualcomm told that select developers will get a beta version of the Adreno GPU driver. They will work on it and share feedback.

So, that’s a lot of good things in the right direction. Hopefully, things work out the same in reality.
