TL;DR

  • The first Samsung tri-folding smartphone could debut later this year.
  • Samsung will only make 300,000 units of its first tri-foldable smartphone. This also indicates how the phone could only be available in select regions.
  • Unlike the Huawei Mate XT, which follows a Z-shaped folding pattern, Samsung’s tri-folding handset could feature a G-shaped design.

Samsung has been working on a tri-folding smartphone for a long time but behind closed doors. While details about the company’s first tri-foldable phone are limited, a new report sheds light on when it could arrive in the company’s home market (and a couple of other Asian countries). Here’s when Samsung’s tri-foldable smartphone can break cover.

According to a report by Sisa Journal, the first Samsung tri-folding smartphone could debut at the second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year. For those catching up, the event usually sees the launch of the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices.

This year, Samsung is expected to unveil the Z Fold 7 and the Z Flip 7 at the Galaxy Unpacked event (perhaps in August?). While the foldables are usually accompanied by new Galaxy earbuds and smartwatches, this year, they could come out alongside Samsung’s first tri-folding smartphone.

Samsung Acknowledges The Pain Peeling Issues On The Galaxy Z Fold 6, Issues Advisory

A couple of days ago, we reported how Samsung reduced the production target for the upcoming foldables, and the same is true for the tri-folding smartphone. The report highlights how Samsung will only make 300,000 units of its first tri-foldable smartphone. This also indicates how the phone could only be available in select regions.

There’s a chance that Samsung could increase production if the foldable succeeds in its launch. However, nothing can be said with surety.

G-Shaped vs. Z-Shaped Tri-Folding Design

Unlike the Huawei Mate XT, which follows a Z-shaped folding pattern, Samsung’s tri-folding handset could feature a G-shaped design. In other words, the phone will fold twice toward its inside (imagine holding the left and the right screen panels and folding them toward the central panel).

Samsung reasons that the design is more durable than the Z-shaped design and will increase the durability of the tri-folding smartphone, specifically when it is not in use. Last but not least, the smartphone won’t feature an under-display selfie camera, which could be due to engineering complications or to reduce the manufacturing cost wherever possible.
