Sony’s PlayStation continues to be a top choice among gamers. The recent PlayStation 5 has garnered an impressive reception, with sales surpassing 61.7 million units as of June 2024. It appears that Sony is looking to innovate with the next iterations of its gaming console controller. Recently, the company has filed a patent for a PlayStation Controller featuring a specialized ‘Rewind Button.’

Tech4Games has reported on a patent that pertains to gameplay rewind technology. According to the publication, this feature would be triggered when the user presses a universal button on a controller while engaged in live gameplay.

The rewind button would enable a feature that allows the user to view a sequence of image frames from live gameplay, which they can navigate through. They have the option to choose a specific frame to analyze their game from that moment forward.

Several images from the patent have been released, revealing the potential placement of the Rewind button. It appears that this button may be situated in the same area as the current ‘Share’ button on the controller. Additionally, another image displays an on-screen interface button resembling those found on a television remote, featuring icons for Play, Pause, Next, Previous, Fast Forward, and Rewind. The ‘Rewind’ button is also visible in this depiction.

Usage of Rewind Button

This rewind button is designed to fulfill multiple functions. According to the patent description, it will assist players in recalling crucial quest details they may have overlooked, as well as providing guidance on how to navigate to previously visited locations that they may not remember how to access. Additionally, the description highlights the feature that enables players to bookmark specific segments of their gameplay for future reference. This rewind button will facilitate swift returns to these saved gameplay moments.

Limitations of Rewind Button

The rewind feature is not without its limitations. Retrieving recent gameplay while actively engaged in a video game can be challenging, often requiring modifications to an existing service to access specific gameplay segments. Players may need to explicitly direct the gaming system to generate a file that includes the desired gameplay portions for sharing with others. This process necessitates that the player temporarily exit the game to create the sharing file. Once the sharing is finalized, the player can then view the selected segment of gameplay.

Although the patent and its potential applications are intriguing, it does not necessarily indicate that the company has completed the development of this rewind button for future PlayStation controllers. Gaming companies frequently file patents for various concepts they are exploring, but not all of these ideas make it to the final product.

The idea of a rewind button is not entirely novel, as emulators on both PC and mobile platforms have incorporated functionalities such as saving and fast-forwarding for some time. Additionally, the Nintendo Switch’s Online retro libraries offer a rewinding feature during gameplay. However, if this development comes to fruition, it would mark the first instance of such a feature being integrated directly into hardware by a prominent console manufacturer.

If Sony goes forward with this patent, it might find its way into the PS6 official controller.
