TL; DR
  • SanDisk’s Extreme Portable SSD starts at ₹29,599 for 1TB; Portable SSD starts at ₹18,999.
  • Extreme reads at up to 2,000MB/s, with IP65, AES encryption, and a five-year warranty.
  • Portable SSD reads up to 1,000MB/s, with a three-year warranty and projected two-meter drop protection.

SanDisk India has launched two new types of portable SSDs in the country. They include the SanDisk Portable and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. While the former is the more affordable of the two, the latter is built for a specific purpose, and that purpose comes with a hefty price tag.

SanDisk Portable & Extreme Portable SSD: Pricing & Availability

Both SanDisk SSDs are available on leading e-commerce platforms and in retail stores. The Extreme starts at ₹29,599 for 1TB, while the more affordable Portable version starts at ₹18,999 for 1TB. If you’re wondering why SSDs are so expensive, it’s the ongoing memory, storage, and component crisis.

My math says the Extreme costs ₹10,600 more than the Portable at 1TB, or ₹29.60 per gigabyte versus ₹19.00. That premium, per the official announcement, buys you double the read speed, tougher protection, and encryption.

If you transfer video footage daily and losing footage means losing money, I’d suggest you take a serious look at the Extreme Portable.

Which SanDisk Portable SSD Should You Buy?

The expensive Extreme Portable SSD is clearly for photographers, videographers, and professionals. It reads at up to 2,000MB/s, which roughly transfers around 1,000 high-resolution pictures in under 60 seconds (each picture is about 33MB).

Alternatively, that’s enough speed to move 200GB of 4K video footage in under two minutes, under ideal conditions. The Extreme also justifies its higher price tag with drop protection up to three meters and an official IP65 rating. A password and 256-bit AES hardware encryption lock your files for added security.

Before you invest in this one, make sure your primary device has a 20Gbps port before paying the premium.

The more affordable SanDisk Portable SSD targets young students, office workers, and everyday users. It reads at up to 1,000MB/s and carries a three-year limited warranty.
