Samsung may be preparing another step forward in foldable display technology. New supply chain information suggests the company is testing a thicker Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) layer for upcoming Galaxy Z Fold models, with the goal of improving both durability and crease performance.
The reported upgrade would increase the UTG thickness from the current 45 microns to around 60 microns. While that may sound like a small change on paper, it is a substantial increase in the protective glass layer that sits above the foldable display.

According to the leak, Samsung is currently testing the thicker UTG on the Galaxy Z Fold8, the wider foldable model expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Recent leaks have shown Samsung moving toward two distinct foldable form factors, with the standard Fold8 adopting a shorter and wider design while the Ultra retains the taller Fold design seen in previous generations.
Samsung has gradually strengthened its foldable displays over the years. Earlier Galaxy Fold models used thinner UTG layers, while newer generations have steadily increased thickness and improved hinge designs. The move to 60-micron glass appears to be part of that long-term refinement strategy rather than a dramatic redesign.

A thicker glass layer could bring several practical benefits. Beyond making the display more resistant to everyday wear, it may also help make the center crease less noticeable during regular use. Chinese brands such as OPPO, HONOR, and vivo have continued to push thinner designs and increasingly subtle display creases, creating additional pressure on Samsung to maintain its lead in the foldable segment. Recent reports from Ice Universe have also suggested Samsung is working to bring crease performance closer to some of the best-performing foldables currently available.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Launch Date
