Samsung’s new invention Neon breathes life into Artificial Human, which was earlier limited to Sci-Fi movies only. We have witnessed digital human prototypes like Baby X in the past. However, STAR Labs, a progeny of Samsung’s Technology and Advanced Research Labs take this into the next step.

At CES 2020 in Las Vegas, Samsung introduced Star Labs and its neoteric creation – Neon. It described the tech as “a computationally created virtual being that looks and behaves like a real human, with the ability to show emotions and intelligence.”

Samsung Neon: What can it do?

Neon’s official website introduces its first artificial human. It vaunts the virtual animation as life-like and the inspiration is obviously soaked out of humans from all walks of life.

It is clearly called “your friend” and not an AI assistant, not an interface to the Internet and not a music player.

Neon is touted as multi-lingual and capable of speaking varied languages like Spanish, Hindi, Japanese and English.

The underlying Core R3 engine embodies three central tenets viz. The reality, Realtime and Responsive. This means it is trained as a human child about the intricacies of the world around and how we look, behave and interact with all things nature. All of this is safe from a privacy and trust standpoint, thanks to state-of-the-art protocols.

From the looks of it, the AI avatars do appear a lot like any other regular human. So, it will probably tune to the nuances of human movements with real-time latency. The company says, “Neons are more like us, an independent but virtual living being, who can show emotions and learn from experiences. Unlike AI assistants, Neons do not know it all, and they are not an interface to the Internet to ask for weather updates or to play your favorite music.”

But like already mentioned, they are not sentient or all-knowing like the Smart Assistants. So, the applications might include goal-oriented tasks and conversational interactions on behalf of actual humans. This may range from jobs like online-ed teachers, financial advisers, health-care providers, actors, spokespeople, TV anchors, and concierges.

Lastly like humans, Neons will also be different from each other.
