Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 Hands-On: Familiar Formula, Sharper Finish

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip8 alongside the Galaxy Z Fold8 (read hands-on review) and the new Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra (read hands-on review) at its July Galaxy Unpacked event in London. In a launch dominated by the redesigned Fold8 line, the Flip8 plays a familiar role: it’s the smaller, cheaper, more pocketable foldable in Samsung’s lineup, and this year it arrives as a careful, iterative refinement of last year’s Z Flip7 rather than a ground-up redesign. Pre-orders opened the same day as the announcement, with the phone going on sale August 7, 2026.

After spending hands-on time with the device ahead of launch, the story of the Z Flip8 is one of small, tangible improvements: a thinner, lighter chassis, a sharper cover-screen experience, and a return to Qualcomm silicon in North America, layered on top of a formula that hasn’t fundamentally changed since the Z Flip7. It’s a more polished phone, but also a notably more expensive one.

Design and Build

The Z Flip8 is Samsung’s thinnest and lightest flip phone to date: 6.1mm thick unfolded and 13.1mm folded, weighing 180g. That’s down from the Z Flip7’s 6.5mm unfolded profile and 188g weight, a modest but noticeable reduction in the hand. Samsung says it managed this without shrinking the battery, thanks to a new silicon-carbon battery cell that packs the same 4,300 mAh capacity into a smaller footprint.

The frame also picks up more pronounced beveled edges than the Flip7, which made the phone easier to pry open one-handed during my limited hands-on time, helped along by a noticeably stronger hinge. That hinge is built on the same reinforced titanium structure introduced on the Fold8 series. 

A titanium alloy film sits beneath the display to create a more durable panel with a shallower, less noticeable crease. It’s worth noting the Flip8 doesn’t inherit the full “Flex Titanium” display treatment exclusive to the Fold8 line, but the crease reduction is still a real, felt improvement over the Flip7.

The Flip8 ships in four colors: Pink, Cream, Graphite, and a Samsung.com-exclusive Mint. Build quality feels a step up from the Flip7 in the hand, even if the overall silhouette is familiar.

Display and Bezels

Inside, the 6.9-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display carries over at the same size and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate as the Flip7, with Vision Booster support for outdoor visibility. The crease is meaningfully reduced thanks to the new hinge, though peak brightness hasn’t been bumped up the way it has on the Fold8 Pro (which tops out at 2,600 nits).

The more interesting change is on the outside. The 4.1-inch Super AMOLED cover screen keeps the same panel size as the Flip7, but Samsung has trimmed the bezels around it further, giving the FlexWindow a noticeably more edge-to-edge look than last year’s model. It’s a very small change and hardly visible unless you look at it side by side with a Flip7.

That tighter cover screen is paired with a reworked FlexWindow interface. Swiping down now reveals both Quick Settings and notifications together, swiping up opens a dedicated app drawer, and the whole experience is designed to mirror the phone’s unfolded software more closely, which cuts down on the friction of previous Flip cover screens. The app drawer is capped at 16 apps out of the box, though Samsung nudges users toward the MultiStar module in Good Lock to unlock more.

Performance

The Z Flip8 uses a 2nm chipset across the board, but which one you get depends on where you buy it. In North America, Samsung has returned to Qualcomm after the Exynos-only Z Flip7, equipping the phone with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. In other regions, including the UK and India, the phone ships with Samsung’s own Exynos 2600, the same chip found in the Galaxy S26 and S26+. Both configurations pair with 12GB of RAM.

That Snapdragon return is a meaningful upgrade for US buyers coming from the Exynos-based Flip7, and it also unlocks the same Gemini-powered agentic features found on the Fold8 series, including the ability to hand off multi-step tasks, like researching and booking a hotel from a single photo of a landmark, directly from the phone.

Battery and Charging

Battery capacity holds steady at 4,300 mAh, identical to the Z Flip7, with 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. The headline change here isn’t capacity but chemistry. The new silicon-carbon cell is what let Samsung shave down the phone’s thickness without sacrificing battery size. I would’ve preferred a larger battery though.

Cameras

Camera hardware is unchanged from the Flip7: a 50MP main sensor  and a 12MP ultrawide (f/2.2) on the back, with a 10MP front camera for selfies and video calls. The improvements this year are mostly computational and software-driven.

• ProVisual engine: an enhanced processing pipeline aimed at improving selfies and detail retrieval from the main sensor.
• Horizontal Lock: keeps video footage level and stable, useful for camcorder-style, one-handed shooting with the Flip’s hinge.
• MyFan Cam: an AI post-processing mode that tracks and crops a single chosen subject through a clip, with adjustable output aspect ratio, and it can be reapplied to the same footage for different people afterward.
• Mirror Mode: uses the rear camera and cover screen together as a high-detail, higher-frame-rate mirror, including a temporary on-device capture you can pinch-to-zoom into. Samsung pitches it for makeup application.
• Dual recording with a live preview on the cover screen.

Software and AI

The Z Flip8 runs One UI 9 on Android 17, and beyond the redesigned FlexWindow, Samsung has expanded Now Brief with more customizable cards, split into health, weather, and video categories, each with its own schedule and cadence. Gemini integration goes deeper too, with agentic automation tasks accessible directly from the cover screen. Every Z Flip8 also comes with six months of Google AI Pro included, which bundles 5TB of cloud storage.

Pricing: US and India

The Z Flip8 comes in two storage configurations, 12GB RAM paired with either 256GB or 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, and it costs more than the Z Flip7 did at launch in both markets. Samsung has pointed to industry-wide RAM price pressure as a factor behind this year’s increase.

In the US, that’s a flat $100 increase over the Flip7 at both storage tiers. In India, the gap is wider in absolute terms, a jump of roughly ₹15,000 at the base tier and ₹23,000 at the top tier, though the percentage increase is broadly similar to the US bump.

Galaxy Z Flip8 vs. Galaxy Z Flip7: What’s Changed

Side by side, the Z Flip8 and Z Flip7 share the same screen sizes, the same core camera hardware, and the same battery capacity. This is an iteration, not a reinvention. The real differences are concentrated in a handful of areas: a thinner and lighter chassis, tighter bezels around the cover display, a stronger titanium-reinforced hinge with a shallower crease, the return of Snapdragon silicon in North America, and a noticeably more capable cover-screen software experience. Camera improvements are entirely computational.

The higher launch price in both the US and India places greater emphasis on those refinements.
