With OnePlus 6’s grand entry in India this year, the sale of mobile behemoth OnePlus accounted for close to 40 percent of premium phones sold in the Indian market during the second quarter of 2018, according to a report by Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research.

Samsung stood second at 34 percent share in premium segment sales, whereas Apple fared the lowest at 14 percent share in premium segment market this year. Putting together the numbers sold by top three brands, Samsung, Apple and OnePlus swept nearly 88 percent of the entire premium market segment in India. However, the figure seems weak when compared to 95 percent premium segment sale of these brands in the Q1, 2018.

Mobile phones priced at Rs 30,000 and above are broadly categorized as “Premium Smartphones”. The segment witnessed a decent annual growth of 19 percent and sequential growth of 10 percent in the second quarter of 2018.

The report said that “The uptick in consumer demand in the premium segment was driven by increasing offers around the new launches as compared to a year ago…This is due to the entry of new players in the segment led by Huawei (P20), Vivo (X21), Nokia HMD (Nokia 8 Sirocco) and LG (V30 Plus)”.

Samsung managed to bag a little over one-third share in the premium smartphone segment during Q2, 2018 by aggressive promotion around its flagship Galaxy S9/S9+.

On individual assessment, OnePlus 6 topped the chart in terms of its sale in premium segment category, with Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus and OnePlus 5T ranking 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Neil Shah, Partner and Research Director, IoT, Mobile and Ecosystems, Counterpoint Research stated that “The steady focus on high-end flagship smartphones and unprecedented community connect helped OnePlus earn user trust and spread brand awareness through word of mouth,”.
