MediaTek has refreshed the Helio G lineup with G96 and G88 chipsets. While G96 is an upgrade over the G95 for the most part, G88 follows up the G85. Now that their lineage is clear, note that these bring improvements on components like display and camera support. But aren’t a big difference over their predecessors in their core structure.

MediaTek Helio G96 Improvements

Helio G96 is based on the same 12nm node that the G95 was based on and sports the same core layout of two Cortex A76 performance cores plus Cortex A55 efficiency cores. The difference comes in the graphics which is actually a downgrade in the form of Mali G57 MC2 GPU. But, MediaTek has equipped the chip with HyperEngine 2.0 Lite which promises better performance, faster network response, and more power savings.

Other areas of improvement are in the display which now supports 120Hz at FHD+ resolution; cameras which now boast support for max 108MP resolution, newer Bluetooth 5.2, Cat 13 LTE modem, and UFS 2.2 storage format.

MediaTek Helio G88 Improvements

Helio G88 is also fabbed on the 12nm node like the above one and its precursor G85. It is still made of two Cortex A75 high-frequency cores plus Cortex A55 low-frequency cores. It also comes with MediaTek’s HyperEngine 2.0 Lite graphics enhancements along with quicker connectivity, and power gains.
