MediaTek and Qualcomm are dominant names when it comes to application processors used in consumer appliances. When it comes to smartphones, technological advancements that may be credited to competent core designs from ARM and advancement in chipset manufacturing processes have helped further narrow the performance gap in the mid-tier and affordable chips from the two brands.
The Dimensity chips launched by MediaTek are quite competent and only recently have they begun to show up in actual phones in India.
Are Snapdragon processors better than MediaTek processors?
Qualcomm assumes the dominant position in the Android landscape and yes, the Snapdragon chips have consistently done better with regards to memory subsystems and GPU, but saying “Snapdragon is better than Mediatek” is over simplification and actually erroneous.
It obviously depends on the individual chips and SKUs you are comparing. For instance, Mediatek’s Dimensity 1000+ performs better than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G and both chipsets are available in the same price bracket.
Most chipset makers are now lifting ARM cores directly off the shelf and passing them on without customizations – and that kind of narrows the gap. With an increase in taxes and duties, manufacturers are more accepting of cheaper MediaTek chips for delivering comparable performance in the affordable segment.
It must also be mentioned that apart from processing cores, a chipset includes several other components including GPU (graphics), ISP (camera performance), DSP (AI), Modem, and more – and Qualcomm remains ahead with these parameters when you compare the top-of-the-line chips from both brands.
Best MediaTek Chipsets:
So, if you are just curious or looking to buy a Mediatek powered phone in India, here are a few available chipsets that we can recommend:
Here are some competent phones that employ these chips:
1. Oppo Reno5 Pro 5G
Oppo Reno 5 Pro (review) is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ that proved remarkably capable at driving a premium smartphone experience. The chipset is comparable to, or rather a little better than, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 750G that’s quite popular these days.
Oppo Reno5 Pro also has a fantastic design. It’s slim and light, and has a 90Hz AMOLED display with curved side edges. Oppo’s ColorOS 11 software is quite appealing (finally!) and the 65W fast charger can top up the 4300mAh battery in just 30 minutes.
2. Realme X7 Pro
Realme X7 Pro (review) is another capable handset that is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage – and it’s a solid phone for mobile gaming.
It has a 120Hz Super AMOLED display, and is available for an under INR 30K price. It’s comfortable to wield, supports 65W fast charging, and offers decent camera performance.
3. Realme X7 5G
Realme X7 (review) replaces the Snapdragon 730G powered Realme 7 Pro in the companies portfolio. It’s a capable performer, supports 50W fast charging, and has a good quality AMOLED display on board.
This one is powered by Mediatek Dimensity 800u paired with up to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and up to 128GB UFS 2.1 storage. The 64MP primary camera does a great job, when compared against other options in the same budget.
4. Realme Narzo 30 Pro
Realme Narzo 30 Pro (review) is driven by MediaTek Dimensity 800u and is one of the most affordable 5G phones in India. We expect this 7nm process-based MediaTek chip to be a popular pick for affordable 5G phones moving forward.
Performance-wise, the Dimensity 800u is comparable to Snapdragon 720G and Snapdragon 730G. The gaming experience was also fairly good. For an under INR 20K price, the Narzo 30 Pro offers a lot to look forward to including a 5000mAh battery with 30W fast charging, 48MP primary camera, and a 120Hz IPS LCD display.
5. Oppo F19 Pro+ (upcoming)
Oppo F19 Pro+ is still in yet to go official, but its arrival has been confirmed via a teaser on Amazon India. This is expected to be a 5G phone powered by Mediatek Dimensity 800u.
Rumors suggest an AMOLED display, 64MP primary camera, 32MP selfie camera, and 4500mAh battery with 30W fast charging support.
