MediaTek has launched it’s Helio G90 and G90T mobile chipsets targeted at gaming phones. They come with octa-core CPUs, accompanied with up to 10GB of RAM, AI enhancements and the proprietary HyperEngine gaming technology. Xiaomi will be one of the first to launch an Helio G90-series powered phone.
MediaTek Helio G90 and G90T features
The G90 series employs Arm Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 octa-core CPUs maxing up to 2.05GHz clock speed. This is aided by Arm Mali-G76 GPU with speeds up to 800MHz and a “large” L3 cache. Its a 64-bit processor with heterogeneous multi-processing support. Helio G90 and G90T phones will be able to support up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM (2133MHz).

It also sports HDR10 and lag-free touchscreen input for low-latent gaming instance.
When it comes to connectivity, there is an advanced Cat-12 4G LTE WorldMode modem for dual 4G SIM support across 175 cellular operators worldwide. It also has dual-band wifi support. There is an intelligent network prediction engine that in theory auto connects to LTE connection when Wi-Fi is weak. There is support for HD voice and video calling (VoLTE / ViLTE) as well.
The G90 chips support the popular 48MP as well as the upcoming 64MP cameras with seamless real-time previews and a dedicated ‘night shot’ mode. Use of quad-pixel technology should benefit in low-light photography.
It vaunts fast, accurate AI facial detection and the enhanced AI-camera applications. MediaTek highlights the support for various camera modes like HDR, ultra-wide, telescopic or depth-mapping.

In the age of AI assistants, MediaTek has future-proofed this chip with Dual ‘Wake-Up’ feature. This lets you summon your Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa using more than one trigger word.
MediaTek Helio G90 and G90T availability
The Taiwanese company aims to take on its arch-nemesis – Qualcomm, which recently dropped it’s Snapdragon 855 Plus chip, powering gaming phones such as Asus ROG Phone 2 and the upcoming Black Shark 2 Pro (expected specs).
MediaTek revealed that Xiaomi will be the first one to launch a smartphone with G90T chipset.
Update: Xiaomi confirms that a Redmi phone will wield the Helio G90T chipset.
Lu Weibing, the brand director of Redmi revealed that a Redmi phone will bring the MediaTek Helio G90T chipset via Weibo.com
