How to Lock/Unlock Biometrics Details of Your Aadhaar Card

While UIDAI readies for a new system, called Limited KYC, to secure Aadhaar holders’ privacy, there is a way users can safeguard their data from their end, the Biometric Lock’. UIDAI has included a feature to lock your biometrics details to prevent any misuse of your Adhaar credentials.

Aadhaar biometric data includes Fingerprint and Iris impressions that you often use to authenticate your identity with banks and telecom companies, among others. For instance, the verification of mobile SIM is done by providing the unique 12-digit Aadhaar number and authenticating with your biometric data.

The new “Biometric Lock” will lock your biometric Aadhaar data to avoid anyone from accessing it without your consent. When needed, you can unlock the same and proceed with any required verification process.

Here’s how you can unlock or lock Aadhaar Card Data Online:

*Note: You will need the Aadhaar register mobile number to lock and unlock your biometrics details. In case your mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar visit the nearest Enrolment Centre/Mobile Update End Point.

Step 1: Go to UIDAI website.

Step 2: On the homepage, you will find Lock/Unlock Biometrics option under Aadhaar services. Click on it.

Step 3: The link will redirect you to a page, explaining the benefits of locking biometric details. Scroll down the page and in the Login column, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number along with captcha code.

Step 4: After feeding in the details, Click on Send OTP. A One Time Password will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter it in the appropriate box.

Step 5: Click on the Login button and in the follow-up screen enter the captcha code and press ‘Enter’.

Step 6: That’s it. Your Biometrics is now locked and nobody can access them unless you unlock it.

Step 7: To use your biometrics again you have to unlock them following the same procedure. For your benefit, the unlock window will open for 10 minutes and then again it will be locked.
