Well, it looks like the hype around PlayStation consoles is going after all, as rumors about the company releasing a new gaming console are catching fire. The latest PlayStation console in the market came out in 2020 and hasn’t received any significant upgrade ever since. However, that could change in the second half of this year.

Sony Could Refresh PlayStation 5 Later This Year

According to a report by CNBC, Sony could release a refreshed version of the PlayStation 5 gaming console in 2024. With the new release, the company aims to increase interest in the console by offering a “souped-up” version of the hardware. Further, the refresh will come just in time for the Grand Theft Auto VI, expected to come out in 2025.

The New Console Will Help Boosting The Sales

Sony PlayStation 5 set to restock in India with pre-orders on March 24

Most recently, the Japanese tech conglomerate cut its sales for the financial year ending in March. Initially, the company predicted to sell about 25 million units. However, now the company has cut the forecast to 21 million units. Further, the company has also discussed a gradual decline in sales in the next fiscal year.

It is a proven formula manufacturers use to boost the sales of a relatively old product. For instance, Apple released a new color for its iPhone around six months after the launch of the original series. Gaming console manufacturers often capitalize on public sentiment around sports events or movies. For instance, Sony announced the Cricket 24 PS Bundle in October 2024.

Sony Has Released A ‘Pro’ PlayStation In The Past

PlayStation 4 Pro

In the past, when PlayStation 4’s sales dropped, the company released a PlayStation 4 Pro with slightly better hardware. Coincidently, the PS4 Pro debuted three years after the original PS4 hit the market, and it has already been over three years since the PS5 came out. The launch of PS5 Pro will take place in the second half of 2024, per the CNBC report.

As and when the PS5 Pro comes out, Sony could launch the console in bundles with popular video games at the time. We are almost certain that the company will collaborate with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive to launch a GTA VI special edition. However, how and when these developments take place is something we’re yet to find out.

Sony PS5 Pro Expected Features

Rumors suggest that the PS5 Pro will provide over 23 TFLOPs of processing power, more than twice the PS5’s 10.28 TFLOPs. Further, the console is said to target 4K gaming at 60 frames per second and perhaps 4K at 120 frames per second. It is important to mention that Son’y’s rival, Microsoft, is also preparing its next-generation Xbox console, which could come out in 2026.
