iPhone 16 models are en-route to get a brand-new “Capture Button” but what is it, you may ask? Well, we are inching closer to figuring out exactly what it can do. As per the latest update coming from The Information, one of the (many) functions that the Capture Button could bring is to respond to pressure to zoom in and out of a frame.

What it means is, that you can use the Capture Button to zoom in and out by swiping left or right. It can respond to forceful press to activate recording as well as focus on a light press. The report also puts it forward that Capture Button is likely mechanical and not capacitive as earlier believed although take it with a pinch of salt. If that’s true, the Capture Button will look and feel just like the Action Button we saw with iPhone 15 Pros.

We got a gist of a so-called “Capture Button” in September last year and it has been breaking news ever since. In December, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg said that the button could aid in taking videos although more information is awaited.

With the recent reveal in mind, you know the exact function (probably one of many) that the Capture Button could do. It is likely located on the right side of the iPhone 16 models below the power button. This would make it extremely accessible to your fingers when holding the phone in a horizontal orientation and the same goes for landscape orientation much akin to DSLR cameras.

Why horizontal, you might ask? YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, TikTok, Snapchat videos, etc, are all being recorded in portrait or horizontal mode which means having a feature as such in that orientation that helps Apple trigger positive reviews and more takers. It’s like a win-win situation for all.

The iPhone 16 series is still far away and is slated to arrive only in September this year. The series is unlikely to bring a tectonic shift in terms of design except for a bigger display and powerful chipset (at least on the Pro). Watch out for this space as we discover more about the iPhone 16 series and beyond.
