TL; DR
- Meta has globally launched Instants, a disappearing photo format inside Instagram that blocks editing, screenshots, and gallery uploads, keeping sharing raw and in the moment.
- Photos vanish once viewed or after 24 hours, but are privately archived for up to a year and can be compiled into a Stories recap.
- A standalone Instants app is being tested in select countries, with full parental controls and teen account protections automatically applied.
Instagram built its early reputation on candid moments shared between friends and family members. However, over the years, that reputation got buried under influencer content, brand campaigns, and constant pressure to post things that look good.
Well, Instants is Meta’s attempt to claw some of that original spirit back into the platform, and it went live globally on May 13, 2026.

What Meta’s New Instants Feature Is?
Instants is a new photo-sharing format baked into the Instagram DM inbox. It is accessible by tapping a small stack of photos in the bottom-right corner of the messages page. Once in, you take a picture using Instagram’s camera, without any gallery uploads, filters, or editing tools.
You can add a caption before hitting the shutter button, but that’s it. Once you take the photo, Instagram sends it to your friends (rather broadcasts it, as the feature isn’t available for one-to-one chats), without changing anything.
To me, it sounds more like a toned-down version of Snapchat, which is also built upon the idea of sharing candid moments that disappear with time.
I also say that because once your friends open the Instant, it disappears. If they don’t open it within 24 hours of you sending it, it’s gone anyway. Now, no one can screen-record or screenshot your Instant, as Meta has blocked both.

Archive, Undo, And Recap
Recipients can only react with emojis or send back another Instant of their own, with replies landing directly in DMs, rather than appearing on Instagram as public comments or posts. As mentioned earlier, you can share Instants with your close friends or mutual followers, instead of sharing them with your entire followers list.
Instagram stores Instants in an archival format for up to one year; only you can access old Instants. If you share something by mistake, perhaps in the wrong chat window, an undo button appears right after sending. At the end of the year, you can also combine archived Instants into a recap and post them to your Instagram Stories.
The disappearing photo format is something we’ve seen in the past, ever since Snapchat popularized it. Today, most social media platforms, along with messaging apps like WhatsApp, feature a View Once photo mode, wherein a picture is only accessible once by the viewer.
