Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC made an unseasonably early start to the year by announcing its next flagship phone – the U Ultra. The smartphone was announced alongside its smaller counterpart, the U Play, at a keynote, thus kickstarting the company’s latest U series of smartphones.

The smartphone features HTC’s very own AI, called the Sense Companion and comes in a new all-glass design, which is quite an achievement considering the fact that Apple has been toying with the idea since the last few years but has not yet been successful.

The company has been calling the shockingly glossy exterior Liquid Surface and boasts of a material that not only mimics the properties of liquids, but their looks too.

As far as the specifications are concerned, the phone runs on the latest Android 7 Nougat and features a 5.7-inch QHD display that comes along with a 2-inch additional screen on the top which displays your top contacts, app shortcuts, event notifications and more.

Powered by a Snapdragon 821 chipset along with 4GB RAM, the U Ultra comes in two storage variants (64GB and 128GB) and is devoid of the headphone jack, following the likes of iPhone 7, Moto Z and the company’s Bolt smartphone.

Coming to the optics, the U Ultra features a now common dual camera setup, which appears to be heavily borrowed from the HTC 10 and seemingly features the same 12MP UltraPixel unit with f/1.8 aperture. On the front, the U Ultra features a 16MP camera which can also be used for clicking 4MP UltraPixel photographs.

We are a bit skeptical about the battery backup since there is a measly 3000mAH battery capacity to fuel the sharp phablet-sized display.

The U Ultra is due to be out this quarter although the exact availability details have not yet been specified. The phone is open to pre-orders in the US and will be available for $749 (Rs. 50,990).
