ExtraTorrent Says Good Bye! Third Torrent Player to Go Down this Year

World’s second largest torrent indexing site ExtraTorrent, in an unexpected move, has pulled the plug today. The news came after an extended period of downtime earlier this week. The shutdown announcement was made public on the site’s landing page.

After the recent shut down of KickAss Torrents and Torrentz.eu, the ExtraTorrent is the third major torrent index site that shut down this year. There were reports that some users were temporarily able to access ExtraTorrent via VPN even after shutdown. If you try to access ExtraTorrent now, you will be greeted with the following obituary:

Once KickAssTorrents dropped dead after authorities took action against its founder, ExtraTorrent popularity soared and it became the second largest torrent indexing site. ExtraTorrent was founded in 2006 by a person known only by his codename SaM. In his conversation with TorrentFreak, he further confirmed his decision to end operations. “It’s time we say goodbye,” he added. With ExtraTorrent its release group ETRG – which marked their torrents with either ‘ettv’ or ‘ethd’ – would also remain inactive unless they were to “get enough donations to sustain the expenses”.
