TL; DR
  • Xiaomi 16 Ultra ditches quad cameras for a triple setup.
  • All three sensors are flagship-grade for consistent quality.
  • Retains the 1-inch main and 200MP periscope sensors.

In a significant strategic pivot that signals a major shift in the smartphone camera wars, Xiaomi is going to equip its upcoming flagship, the Xiaomi 16 Ultra, with a triple camera setup.

Our sources, Kartikey Singh, have exclusively revealed to us that Xiaomi is moving away from the quad-camera system that has been a staple of its Ultra lineup for the past few generations.

For years, we have seen a race to add more lenses to the back of phones. However, Xiaomi’s new philosophy for the 16 Ultra appears to be laser-focused on quality over quantity, a move that could redefine expectations for the Leica-backed flagship.

The End of the ‘Filler’ Lens Era

The key takeaway from this development is not the reduction in the number of cameras, but the immense upgrade in the quality of each unit. Kartikey tells us that all three cameras on the Xiaomi 16 Ultra will be high-quality, flagship-grade sensors. This eliminates the “weaker link” often found in multi-camera arrays, where one or two sensors are significantly less capable than the main shooter.

This “no-compromise” approach ensures that you get a consistent, high-fidelity experience whether you are shooting a wide-angle landscape, a standard portrait, or zooming in on a distant subject.

What Stays, What Changes?

Xiaomi is keeping the main 1” type sensor and the 200MP periscope. Instead of two separate cameras for ultra-wide and mid-range zoom, Xiaomi is opting for a single, extremely capable third camera. While the exact specifications of this third sensor are still under wraps, we should be bringing them out soon.

Taking a Cue from the Competition

This bold strategy isn’t entirely without precedent. We’ve seen a similar approach from rival Vivo with its recently launched Vivo X200 Ultra, which also impressed critics by using three powerful sensors instead of four mixed-quality ones.

For the end-user, this is fantastic news. It means no more guesswork about which lens will give you the best shot. The Xiaomi 16 Ultra is shaping up to be a device where the company is going back to the drawing board. The phone is already slated to bring many more changes from the display to the batteries and the SoC.
