Key Revelations of OnePlus 6 Notch: Highlights

  • The notch is coming. OnePlus says the notch is good, it adds more screen real estate without taking away anything.
  • The size of the OnePlus 6 notch will precisely be 19.616mm x 7.687mm.
  • The OnePlus 6 will have a screen-to-body ratio of 90 percent. In other words, a bigger screen housed in the same OnePlus 5T footprint.
  • OnePlus has manually tested top 1000 apps on Play Store to add notch compatibility.
  • While playing videos in landscape mode, the notch will camouflaged in the black top-strip.
  • The clock will be shifted to the left to provide more room for status icons.
  • There will still be a chin at the bottom. OnePlus says that it’s not feasible to make a chin-less Android phone as of today. Apple does it by folding the display at the bottom to the rear of the phone. And that adds to the thickness and cost.
  • And yes, the OnePlus 6 will retail Audio Jack and won’t look the same as the Oppo R15.

Even though Essential Phone and Sharp’s Aquos S2 came out with a notch phone first, its the Apple iPhone X with Face ID (face recognition technology), that made notch a sort of mainstream feature.

Alleged OnePlus 6 back panel

In his conversation with the Verge, Carl Pei revealed the exact size of the notch. “How big a notch always depends on your choices as a company,” he said.

As per him, the Notch allows makers to maximize the screen size without taking anything away from the users. He in a way justifies the design route OnePlus and other smartphone makers are taking. “What you are essentially doing is moving the entire notification bar up, giving users more content on their screen,” he said.

Apart from addressing notch, Carl Pei also touched upon the comparatively larger chins on notch-display Android phones.  All phone displays have a ribbon at the bottom which connects them with device’s logic board and that requires minimal bottom bezel, at least. Apple works around the issue by using a flexible OLED display that folds to the back. This makes the phone expensive and thicker.

Since the company has already stepped in open to defend the ‘notch, it seems the OnePlus 6 will be coming out sooner rather than later.
