Blue Aadhaar in 2026: Everything You Need to Know About the ‘Baal’ ID

The Blue Aadhaar Card (officially known as Baal Aadhaar) is no longer just a “nice-to-have” document for newborns. In 2026, with the full implementation of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, this blue-colored ID has become the primary tool for “age-gating,” allowing parents to verify their child’s identity for schools and apps without oversharing sensitive data.

If your child is under five, they don’t need fingerprints or iris scans yet. Here is the updated 2026 roadmap for getting and maintaining a Blue Aadhaar.

What makes the Blue Aadhaar different?

Unlike the standard white Aadhaar for adults, the Blue Aadhaar is temporary. It is issued specifically for children under five years of age.

  • No Biometrics: Only a photograph of the child is captured.
  • Validity: It expires as soon as the child turns five.
  • Color Hook: The blue color is a visual reminder to parents that a Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) is due once the child ages out.

The 2026 ‘Newborn’ Mandate

If your child was born after October 1, 2023, a Birth Certificate is mandatory for Aadhaar enrollment. You can no longer rely solely on a hospital discharge slip if you want to ensure the ID is valid for school admissions.

Requirements to Apply Blue Aadhaar or Bal Aadhaar

  • Child’s Birth Certificate: Mandatory for those born post-Oct 2023.
  • Parent’s Aadhaar: The child’s ID must be linked to a guardian’s biometric profile.
  • Mobile Number: Essential for receiving the “expiry” alerts from UIDAI.

How to Apply: The Online ‘Appointment’ Myth

There is a common misconception that you can get an Aadhaar card entirely online. You cannot. You must physically visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra because an authorized operator must take the child’s photograph.

Steps to Book Your Slot:

  1. Visit myAadhaar Portal: Go to uidai.gov.in and select Book an Appointment.
  2. Fill the Form: Enter the child’s demographic details and link it to your Aadhaar.
  3. Select Center: Choose a time slot at your nearest enrollment center.
  4. Visit & Verify: Take the child and original documents to the center. New enrollment is completely free.

The ‘Hidden’ Deadlines: Age 5 and 1

The biggest mistake parents make is letting the Blue Aadhaar lapse.

  • At Age 5: You must perform the first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU). This adds the child’s fingerprints and iris scans to the system.
  • At Age 15: A final biometric refresh is required to account for facial changes during puberty.

Pro Tip: UIDAI has extended the Free MBU window until October 2026. If your child is between 5 and 7 or 15 and 17, you can update their biometrics at no cost before this deadline.

Why it matters under the DPDP Act

With the Aadhaar App launch in January 2026, parents can now use “Selective Sharing”. This means if a school or a travel portal needs to verify your child’s age, you can share a secure token from the app that confirms they are under 18 without revealing their full Aadhaar number or address.
