Best Snapdragon 870 phones

Qualcomm has launched Snapdragon 870 processor, which is a slight step up from the last-gen Snapdragon 865+ but doesn’t come even close to the top-end Snapdragon 888. So, you may consider it like SD865++. It has got the same 7nm architecture and three-pronged design with one Cortex-A77 peak performance core at 3.2GHz, three Cortex-A77 CPU cores at 2.4GHz, and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores at 1.8GHz clock speed. The main difference here as you’d noticed by now is a 100GHz bump in top core frequency.

Rest, it packs the same Snapdragon X55 5G Modem for 5G and the FastConnect 6800 Subsystem for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity. Let’s see what else does the new chip contains.

So, as you see, there isn’t much difference between the Snapdragon 870 and 865 Plus, save for the 3.2% increase in clock speed of the top Cortex A77 core.

That means the Snapdragon 870 vs Snapdragon 888 difference is pretty significant. This includes everything from the new underlying architecture, core configuration, GPU, DSP, and other areas. The only exception is in the area of video capture and playback which happens to be the same across three chips.

Motorola Edge S

Motorola gets the first crack at the SD870 chip with its Edge S handset. The phone is backed by up to 8gigs of LPDDR5 RAM and 256gigs of UFS 3.1 storage. There is a 5000mAh power source inside that’s bolstered by a 20W fast charger.

Edge S ships with Android 11 software which should be mostly stock with some useful additions. The front of the phone has two cameras, one of which offers a wider perspective. The back meanwhile sports a 64MP triplet. Other things in the mix include dual-mode 5G, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, a heart rate sensor, a 90Hz screen, a 1TB SD card, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and IP52 water resistance.

Qualcomm has announced a list of its partners comprising names like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, Motorola, and iQOO. So, you could expect flagship-grade phones from these brands with Snapdragon 870 in the course of 2021.
