The world is on the verge of transforming from conventional fuel cars to electric cars and India is also adopting the sustainable trend at a great pace. The major automakers are rapidly pushing their R&Ds to produce more electric vehicles than ever.  We have now entered into 2022 when the global auto industry is showcasing its intentions and efforts to shift toward green energy. For India, the two-wheeler segment has seen considerable development with Ola electric scooter among the smartest launches. Not only that, the four-wheeler section albeit at its evolving stage has gained appreciable popularity when Tesla is fighting to enter the Indian borders.

As of now, Tata Motors is leading the way with two inexpensive electric cars in its portfolio. While vehicle manufacturers like Mahindra, Hyundai, and others are also keeping their heads high in the queue of electric vehicles. Also, there are plenty of electric cars from luxury brands like BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Audi, and others.

We have compiled a list of the five cheapest electric cars and five premium electric cars in India that retail across the country. Let’s have a look at them.

Best Affordable Electric Cars

1. Tata Nexon EV, EV Max

The Tata Nexon EV comes in an SUV design packing a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery rated with IP67 water resistance capability. It is claimed to run for 312km on a single charge. The car has a 3-Phase permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces power of 130.7 bhp and a maximum torque of 245nm. The infotainment system includes a 7-inch touchscreen display with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It sports power steering, an anti-lock braking system, two airbags, front fog lights, a sunroof, and a rear camera. The newly launched Nexon EV Max offers a longer 437km of range. The ex-room price of Tata Nexon EV is INR 14.99 lakh onwards.

2. Tata Tigor EV

The Tata Tigor EV is a sedan-style electric car equipped with a liquid-cooled 26kWh battery that delivers 55 kW of power and 170Nm of torque. The fully charged Tigor EV gives up to 306 km mileage. The battery set-up is rated with IP67 to sustain even in harsh conditions. The electric car has a 7-inch touchscreen display and features a host of smart features that can be controlled through the ZConnect app. The safety features include dual front airbags, ABS, a rear parking camera, and an anti-lock braking system. The ex-room price starts at INR 12.49 lakh.

3. Hyundai Kona Electric

The Hyundai Kona Electric features a permanent magnet synchronous type motor engine with a maximum power of 134bhp and a maximum torque of 395nm. The hatchback-style Hyundai car juices energy from a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery. It is said to deliver a mileage of 452km/full charge. The electric car achieves acceleration to 100kmph in just 9.7 seconds. It comes with six airbags and sports major standard safety features. The starting price of Hyundai Kona Electric is INR 23.84 lakh.

4. MG ZS EV

The MG ZS EV is an SUV car featuring a 44.5kWh battery that produces a maximum mileage of 419km per charge. The engine type is a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 141bhp and 350nm torque. It gains 100kmph of acceleration in 8.5 seconds. The MG electric SUV has six airbags, a sunroof, a moon roof, power steering, ABS, and a button to start/stop the engine. The MG ZS EV retails at INR 21.99 lakh onwards.

5. Mahindra e-Verito

The Mahindra e-Verito is a modest electric car featuring a sedan design. The car boasts a 3-phase AC induction motor delivering 41.5bhp power and 91nm torque. It can achieve a maximum speed of 86km/h. It is powered by a 21.2kWh lithium-ion battery claimed to offer 181km of range once fully charged. It takes around 11 hours to fully charge the battery. Key features include power steering, ABS, and driver airbag. The ex-showroom price of e-Verito is INR 12.30 lakh onwards.

6. Mercedes-Benz EQC

Mercedes-Benz EQC is a premium electric car that comes with a powerful 80kWh battery pack. The EQC provides 408hp of power and generates a torque of 760Nm. The distance range of the car is 414km which is, however, lower than Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV. The EQC charges itself fully in 40 minutes when plugged with the provided DC fast charger. While with a home power socket, it takes around 20 hours to get fully charged. The ex-showroom price of Mercedes-Benz EQC is Rs 99.50 lakh onwards.

7. BMW iX

The BMW iX marks an entry of the Germany-based premium carmaker into the eco-friendly mobility sector of India. The company has launched two models in series – xDrive 40 and xDrive 50. The standard variant provides a range of 414km delivering a power of 326hp and a torque of 630Nm. While the xDrive 50 comes to offer a mileage of 611km and produces 523hp of power and 765 Nm of peak torque. Both the models take 6.1 seconds to accelerate from 0-100kmph. The starting price of the BMW iX series electric car is Rs 1.16 crore.

8. Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar I-Pace is the first electric car from the luxury vehicle brand in India offering a really premium set of features. The most interesting feature of the I-Pace is the working of its DC charger that fills the 90kWh battery setup in just 2 hours. With the regular charger, it takes 13 hours to get fully charged. The car is claimed to achieve a range of 470km. It includes a motor producing power of 400hp and a torque of 696Nm. The Jaguar I-Pace retails at a starting price of Rs 1.19 crore.

9. Audi e-tron GT

The Audi e-tron GT comes to offer a pure sportiness and progressive luxury feel with its EV features. It produces an electrical output of 350kW and a torque of 630Nm. The car accelerates itself to 100kmph in 4.1 seconds. The range it offers is 500km per charge. It boasts an 83.07kWh battery that takes 22.5 minutes to charge from 5% to 80%. It comes with optional matrix LED headlights with Audi laser light depicting its progressive design language. The ex-showroom price of Audio e-tron GT in Delhi is Rs 1.66 crore.

10. Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan is a beautifully designed sedan electric car with a sporty look. It includes a 79.2kWh battery pack that is said to produce up to 408 bhp power in over-boost mode. There is an optional variant packing a 93.4kWh battery providing up to 476 bhp. The top of the car is 230kmph and the range is 484km. It takes around 5.4 seconds to achieve a speed of 0-100kmph.  The Porche Taycan is retailing in India at a starting price of Rs 1.53 crores.
