Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone, reportedly called the iPhone Ultra, may debut exclusively in the US. For those catching up, the first foldable iPhone is said to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup this September. Is it just me, or does this remind anyone of the Vision Pro?

A Staggered Rollout, Not A Global One
According to a new report from Australian outlet ChannelNews, which cites local carriers, a major retailer, and an unnamed Chinese component supplier, the foldable will be a “no show” on shelves in markets like Australia with the rest of the iPhone 18 series.
However, the report also mentions that China and other key regions will get the iPhone Ultra, though the launch might be delayed by two to three months. In other words, the foldable iPhone might arrive in non-US markets by the end of this year (November or December).

The supplier attributes the delay to ongoing supply and pricing issues. Further, it also mentions the testing issues with production units already built. Separate reporting suggests the hinge and foldable display remain the primary bottlenecks (something that has come up early as well), with Foxconn reportedly still adjusting mass-production plans as late as July.
To me, this doesn’t sound surprising at all, because plenty of reports from early this year claimed that the iPhone Ultra, though it might be announced in September 2026, will only be available between October and December 2026.

Why A limited Launch Actually Makes Sense
Apple has precedent here: the Vision Pro. The company’s first mixed-reality headset launched in the US alone in February 2024, then expanded to other markets months later, due to low production volumes and limited retail readiness.
Returning to the iPhone Ultra, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has separately estimated second-half 2026 shipments at just 7-8 million units, with only 0.5-1 million units arriving in Q3. This reinforces the case for a phased approach for Apple’s first foldable.

When To Expect From The iPhone 18 Pro Announcement
Separately, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has pointed to Wednesday, September 9, as the likely date for the September keynote. Given that Labor Day on September 7 rules out Apple’s usual second-Tuesday pattern. Gurman also expects pre-orders to shift to Saturday, September 12, rather than the usual Friday.
The reason? September 11 marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Meanwhile, the public on-sale date was expected the following Friday, September 18. I think Apple choosing a US-first rollout for foldables would be a sensible call here. The company isn’t deprioritizing other markets. Instead, a US-first debut could give it some time to gauge the initial response, and then expand the logistics and supplies to other countries.
