Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2023 (WWDC): Apple Vision Pro, new Macs & more announced

Apple’s biggest event of the year, the WWDC 2023 has officially begun today. The 2023 edition of the Worldwide Developers Conference by Apple comes with some exciting announcements, both in terms of hardware as well as software. This year’s event includes software updates for iPhones, iPads, Macbooks, and more.

The event is taking place at California Park and includes live attendance as well. For everyone else around the globe, live streaming is taking place via Apple’s website and YouTube page. Let us have a look at what all the brand has announced during WWDC 2023.

Apple Vision Pro

New kind of computer that allows spatial computing by merging digital into your surroundings. This headphone-like computer can transform the environment around you into your workspace and can be controlled by gestures of the user’s eyes hands and voice. Eyesight makes sure that the user stays in touch with his surroundings and works simultaneously. Users can scroll between rows of icons by looking at them and performing actions like tapping to select and flicking to scroll. It supports voice commands from Siri and can show the real world in full color with the ability to project 3D objects like apps and windows in the real world.

The headset will support OpticID, a biometric tool for unlocking vision pro, and have a unique spatial sound system, digital crown controls, an adjustment dial for a customizable fit, and more. Walt Disney is partnering with Vision Pro to create interactive content. It will cost 3499 USD and the launch will happen next year. More on this in a separate story.

15-inch MacBook Air

Apple has announced a new 15-inch MacBook Air that resembles the M2 MacBook Air and offers similar specs and features. It is powered by an M2 chipset and sports a 15.3-inch Super Retina display. The Mac weighs 3.3 pounds and is 11.5 mm thick. It comes with 18 hours of battery life and connects seamlessly with iPhones.

M2 ultra chipset has also been announced with 24 core CPU, 76 Core GPU, 192GB unified memory, 134 billion transistors, 8000GB/s memory bandwidth, and ultra fusion architecture. It is priced at 1299 USD and will be available next week.

Mac Pro

Mac Pro is powered by an M2 Ultra chipset and comes with 2 HDMI ports and dual 10GB Ethernet. It supports WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, 6 Pro Display XDRs, and up to 192GB of unified memory. The Mac Pro comes with 8 Thunderbolt 4 ports, 6 open PCIe gen 4 slots, rack mounting, and up to 22 streams of 8K ProRes videos. It costs 6999 USD and will be available next week.

Mac Studio

The Mac Studio announced by Apple will take the performance to the next level with M2 Max and M2 Ultra processors with up to 24 CPU cores, 60 GPU cores, and up to 192GB of unified memory. The Studio comes with higher bandwidth HDMI and supports 6 Pro Display XDRs. There is a 100gb ethernet, HDMI port, SDXC port, Thunderbolt 4 port, and support for WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The Mac supports up to 8TB of storage and is priced at 1999 USD. It will be available next week.

iOS 17

iOS 17 comes with updates for phone apps, message apps, and face time. The Phone app comes with personalized contact posters, live voicemail, and more. The Facetime app now allows you to leave a video message for the receiver to view and reply to later. The Messages app comes with a more powerful app search, catchup arrow, swipe to reply, audio messages transcribed, inline location tracking, check-in and updated design for iMessages, and stickers experience system-wide.

Airdrop comes with updates for namedrop, share play, autocorrect, journal app, standby, offline maps, pet albums, and Siri.

WatchOS 10

WatchOS 10 comes with substantial software improvements like changes in the interface, reintroduction of widgets, and enhancing the Operating system to make the OS ready for the next generation of Apple Watches. There is a rotating digital crown, two new watch faces, a cycling app updated, and hiking, mental health, and vision health features.

iPad OS 17

iPad OS 17 comes with support for third-party app stores. The lock screen also gets a significant update as interactive widgets and customization similar to ios 16 is found in iPad OS 17 as well. iPad OS 17 interacts with Apple’s AR/VR headset and gets some new apps, like a Health app. There is a lock screen with live activity, multiple timers, pdf app updates like autofill, collaborate, stage manager improved, and more.

Home and Audio updates

tvOS is updated with a Siri remote or iPhone to control the tv, memories as wallpaper, and face time updates. AirPods come with adaptive audio, automatic switching faster, and airplay in hotels.

macOS Sonoma

The new update for macOS, the macOS Sonoma comes with beautiful new screensavers, and widgets visible on the desktop as shortcuts that fade away when you perform a task.  Gaming comes with Metal 3, game mode, and, a game porting toolkit for developers. Video conferencing has been updated, along with Safari being the world’s fastest browser that comes with profiles for work and personal. Web apps will also be available on Macs.
