Apple ended months of speculation and sent out media invites for its fall hardware event. The keynote happens Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. PT at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino.

The invitation tagline, “Surprise and shine,” hints at two big hardware changes. First, the Pro models get a new light-gathering mechanical camera aperture. Second, Apple will debut its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Ultra.

This keynote marks a big shift for Apple. John Ternus will deliver his first flagship iPhone presentation as CEO, after taking over from Tim Cook on September 1, 2026. Cook now serves as Executive Chairman.

iPhone 18 Pro & 18 Pro Max: The “Shine” Upgrades

This fall, Apple is focusing only on its premium lineup: the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and the 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max.

1. Mechanical Variable Aperture

The iPhone 18 Pro Max gets a physical, motorized aperture on its main wide-angle lens. This hardware lets you control depth of field and manage exposure in tough lighting, something software portrait modes can’t match.

2. TSMC 2nm A20 Pro Processor

The new A20 Pro chip uses TSMC’s 2nm process. It should deliver about 18% faster performance and up to 30% better power efficiency compared to last year’s A19 Pro.

3. Redesigned Display & Connectivity

  • Reduced Dynamic Island enables by migrating ambient light and proximity sensors beneath the active OLED display panel.
  • The new Apple C2 modem brings direct-to-cell 5G satellite connectivity.
  • The Pro Max battery now ranges from 5,200 mAh to 5,567 mAh, about a 10% increase over last year.
  • Sky Blue titanium joins the lineup, along with Dark Cherry, Dark Gray, and Silver. Space Black is gone this year.
