A hot minute before Apple’s “Let Loose” launch event on May 7, 2024, a publication spotted multiple references to a new “Apple Pencil Pro” on one of the company’s websites. Given that we’re expecting Apple to launch the rightful successor to the Pencil (2nd Generation), the report sort of confirms the existence of one.

The Company’s Japanese Website Contains References To “Apple Pencil Pro”

According to AppleInsider, Apple’s Japanese website contains multiple mentions of a new device called “Apple Pencil Pro.” The mentions are available in the web page’s source and developer views. However, publically available references aren’t available yet. There’s a good chance the company has updated the website’s code in preparation for the anticipated launch on May 7, 2024.

A version of the text describing the GIF for the Let Loose event’s logo (via The Verge, translated in English) reads, “Green, yellow, orange, and blue paper are folded to form the Apple logo. Inside the logo, a creator’s hand is seen holding an Apple Pencil Pro.” However, it is important to mention that the company’s other websites don’t describe the pencil in the GIF as a “Pro” version.

At the moment, the iPad maker sells three versions of the input device: Apple Pencil (1st Generation), Apple Pencil (2nd Generation), and Apple Pencil (USB-C). While the first one is compatible with relatively older iPads, the second one offers more features and supports the latest models. The third one provides USB-C with better compatibility across the iPad lineup.

Apple Pencil Pro: Expected Features

The upcoming Apple Pencil’s new features include support for the Find My network, interchangeable tips, and, the most anticipated of all, a new squeeze gesture. The Apple Pencil (2nd Generation) offers a quick tap functionality, but its successor could come with squeeze gestures that perform quick actions like adding text shapes, shapes, etc.

The purported Apple Pencil (3rd Generation) could replace the second-generation device, which will be nearly six years old in 2024. It is commendable how Apple creates products that last for so many years. Call it a lazy approach toward research and development or creating something that’s ahead of its time; it increases buyers’ confidence about the product’s longevity (in exchange for a hefty price).
