Cybercriminals these days keep executing various scams to dupe users by stealing their money or breaching their privacy. One recent scam that has been gaining momentum is the Call Forwarding Scam happening with Jio, Airtel, and other telecom users. *401# call forwarding scam includes scammers posing as customer service executives aiming to exploit unsuspecting users. Telecom Operators like Jio and Airtel along with Truecaller have warned the users against call forwarding scams.

What is the *401# Call Forwarding Scam?

The call forwarding scam is a deceptive scheme where scammers claim themselves to be customer service representatives from mobile or internet service providers. They call users and inform them about issues with their mobile internet, account security, or SIM cards. As the next step, they offer a quick solution by dialing a specific number like 401, which will activate the call forwarding to the scammer’s number.

As a part of the scam, the criminal then accesses the victim’s phone calls, potentially intercepting voice OTPs. The person who is being scammed remains unaware as their phone doesn’t ring. The scammer’s aim behind the scam is to get access to money and sensitive information, including bank details and messaging apps.

Ways Used by Scammers to implement the scam

  • While some users believe scammers in one go, others might not be so convinced. This is the reason scammers use various methods to lure innocent people into the scam.
  • They might ask about mobile internet or broadband issues, claiming that the person’s account has been compromised, or claim that their SIM card has issues.

Once they gain the person’s trust, they offer a quick fix by asking him/her to dial a specific number including 401. As soon as the person does this, call forwarding gets activated on the scammer’s number and the person remains unaware of what’s happening with him.

Staying Safe from Call Forwarding Scam

  • Strengthen the security of your phone by using passcodes or biometric authentication methods so that unauthorized access to the phone becomes difficult.
  • Do not dial codes or respond to text messages from unknown sources. No matter how much someone tries to convince you to do so.
  • Never share sensitive information like OTPs, PINs, or passwords with anyone. Mind you, companies like Airtel and Jio never ask for such information.
  • Stay alert and attentive. Use your common sense and analyze the caller’s tone and intentions before proceeding with the call.
  • Install apps like Truecaller to protect themselves from call-forwarding scams by verifying caller’s numbers. Since Truecaller displays the information of the person who is calling, you can disconnect the call and stay safe from the scam.
  • You can also ask your telecom providers like Jio, Airtel, etc. to remove call forwarding from your number if you suspect you are being scammed.
