- Xiaomi has announced its “1+3+8” HyperOS update policy in China.
- This policy promises 12 annual updates: 1 major, 3 feature, and 8 bug-fix updates.
- There is no word on any such policy for India, at least at the time of writing.
Xiaomi has long been criticized for its inconsistent software update policies, especially when it comes to rolling out timely updates. However, the brand seems determined to change that narrative with a new strategy, at least per the promise.
Xiaomi, in China, has announced its “1+3+8” HyperOS update policy, which aims to provide users with a more reliable and consistent update experience. So, what is it and can we expect the same for India as well? Let’s find out.
What is 1+3+8?
The “1+3+8” policy promises a total of 12 updates annually, which breaks down into one major update, three feature-focused updates, and eight bug-fix updates. The major OS updates will bring significant changes to the system, such as moving from HyperOS 1.0 to HyperOS 2.0.
The three feature updates will include smaller enhancements like new functionalities, akin to HyperOS 2.1 or 2.2. Lastly, the eight problem-fix updates will address minor bugs, improve system stability, and roll out monthly security patches.
If you’ve been using a Xiaomi/Redmi phone, you can probably understand how big of a deal this is. This should ensure that users can enjoy timely updates with both new features and a stable system throughout the year.

But… what about India?

While this announcement is great for Chinese users, the situation in India is far from ideal. For instance, the Xiaomi 14 flagship was stuck on the July security patch until October and only received HyperOS 2 in December.
This kind of delay just shows the inconsistencies in Xiaomi’s update approach, particularly for Indian users. Budget and mid-range devices fare even worse, often missing updates entirely or receiving them months later.
There’s some hope, though. A Xiaomi executive recently hinted on Twitter that monthly updates could begin in India by 2025. While this is an encouraging sign, the company hasn’t provided any concrete details or timelines.

I assume that we might hear more about India-specific update policies when the company launches the Xiaomi 15 series in February or March 2025. If the “1+3+8” approach is too hard for India; then, Xiaomi should at least bring a “1+2+6” model, which could still significantly improve the current state of updates for Xiaomi devices.
This new update policy/timeline has the potential to restore faith in Xiaomi’s software ecosystem. However, to truly win over users globally, including in India, Xiaomi needs to ensure it delivers on these promises consistently across all markets and device tiers.
