Xiaomi has officially launched the Redmi Note 17 series in China, skipping the Note 16 name entirely and jumping straight from Note 15 to Note 17. The company is positioning this generation around bigger batteries and better durability, and on paper, that’s true. But once you actually sit with the full spec sheet, camera hardware and storage speed have both been gutted to make room for it. Here’s the complete breakdown for both models.
Redmi Note 17 Specs
Here are the specifications of the Redmi Note 17 in China. It’s worth noting that specifications could vary slightly when the device makes its way to India.

This is Redmi’s largest-ever screen on a Note phone, and jumping from the Note 15’s 5,800 mAh cell to 8,000 mAh is a big deal for battery life. But everything else here feels stripped down rather than refreshed.
UFS 2.2 has been Redmi’s base-tier standard since at least the Note 14 Pro, so getting zero storage speed upgrade this generation is disappointing. Pair that with an 8MP front camera and a main sensor that’s capped at 1080p video, and this doesn’t feel like a phone launching in the second half of 2026.

Alongside the Note 17, the company also launched the Note 17 Pro, and the specifications are listed below. Again, the specifications could vary slightly when the device launches in India.

This is where the cost-cutting really shows, and it’s worth going through each downgrade individually. Start with the camera sensor. The 1/2.76-inch main sensor is noticeably smaller than what Redmi has used on recent Pro models.
If the WekiHome teardown is accurate about this being a JN1-class sensor, that’s a real step down from the LYT600 used in the Redmi Note 15 Pro. For a bit of historical context on how far this has fallen: the Redmi Note 12 Pro shipped with a 1/1.4-inch sensor back in 2022, more than double the light-gathering area of what’s going into this “Pro” phone four generations later.
Then there’s video recording. The Note 17 Pro caps out at 1080p30fps. No 4K, not even at 30fps. The Redmi Note 7 Pro, a phone from 2019, could shoot 4K video. Nine generations later, and Redmi has actively regressed on something this basic.
Storage isn’t much better. The base 128GB configuration is stuck on UFS 2.2, the exact same tier Redmi has used since the Note 14 Pro. You only get the “upgrade” to UFS 3.1 if you pay extra for the 256GB variant, meaning most buyers picking a lower config still won’t see any real storage speed gain.
None of this means the phone is bad across the board. The display is strong for the segment, 3,500 nits peak brightness and a proper 1.5K panel with 12-bit color and HDR10+ isn’t something you typically see at this price. The durability certification spread, IP66/68/69/69K plus Gorilla Glass Victus 2, is about as complete as it gets in the mid-range. And going from a 7,000 mAh battery to 9,000 mAh with 67W charging is a real, usable upgrade.
But Redmi clearly redirected the budget toward battery size and build toughness while gutting the two things people interact with constantly: the camera and storage speed. That’s a trade-off, not a straightforward generational improvement.
Redmi Note 17 Series India Launch?
Tipster Yogesh Brar has already leaked the chipsets for the global lineup, and they’re a bit better than the Chinese verisons. The global Redmi Note 17 is expected to run the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, while the global Note 17 Pro is tipped to get the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, both of which are better than the 4 Gen 4 and the 6s Gen 4 on the Chinese verisons, respectively. Brar has also indicated the series is currently scheduled to launch in India before Diwali this year.
