TL; DR
  • WhatsApp now lets you translate messages inside the app, working in personal chats, groups, and channels.
  • All translations happen on your phone as per WhatsApp.
  • Android gets auto-translate for full chats, but iPhone gets more languages from the start.

WhatsApp is now rolling out message translation on Android and iPhone, starting today. You can long-press a message, tap “Translate,” and get instant results without leaving the chat. Language packs can be downloaded for smoother use, and since it’s all processed locally, Meta doesn’t see your texts (at least that’s what they say).

Android starts with six languages—English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic—plus an auto-translate mode that converts every message in a chat automatically.

iPhone skips the auto mode but supports 19 languages upfront, including Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and more. It will work 1:1 chats, groups, and Channel updates as well.

The feature cuts out the need for third-party tools, making global chats easier without losing privacy. WhatsApp says more languages and accuracy updates are coming, so check for the latest app version to try it out.
