On Tuesday, the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple took the stage and pulled off the curtains from the new iPad models, the Apple Pencil Pro, and a revamped Magic Keyboard. While all the products offer impressive features, there’s something in particular that we’d like to discuss, and it’s the tandem OLED technology used on the exceptionally thin M4 iPad Pro models.

Tandem OLED Consists Of Two Light Emitting Panels Stacked On Each Other
According to the official press release, the new iPad Pro models feature a new Ultra Retina XDR display, which Apple claims is the “world’s most advanced display.” The display features tandem OLED technology, which uses two OLED panels stacked above each other.
Making
To make the tandem OLED, Apple has partnered with LG. It’s not like we’ve seen the dual-OLED display for the first time. The Honor 6 Ultimate, for instance, broke the ice with its dual-stack OLED panel, which, per the company, can achieve a peak brightness of 5000 nits. However, the companies don’t advertise that only the pixels in a small portion of the display can achieve the said brightness, which isn’t true for the tandem OLED on the iPad Pro.

Peak Brightness

When the screen fires up, it combines the light from both OLED panels to provide what the company calls “phenomenal full-screen brightness.” With the dual-OLED panel, the new iPad Pro models can reach up to 1000 nits of full-screen brightness for viewing standard content and up to 1600 nits while viewing HDR content. For reference, the iPad Pro models released in 2022 offered a peak brightness of 600 nits.
Colors And Contrast
The tandem OLED technology enables sub-millisecond control over pixels’ color and luminance, allowing for better precision. This could, in theory, address the trailing effect users complained of facing with the 2022 iPad Pro. Apple also claims that the display showcases better highlights in photos and videos, with increased detail in shadows and low-light areas. The display “delivers deeper black for extreme dynamic range,” says Apple.

Further, the new iPad Pro models feature nano-texture glass that maintains superior image quality while reducing glare. Moreover, the tandem OLED panels on the iPad Pro models improve brightness, contrast, and color accuracy and reduce glare, providing “iPad Pro customers an unparalleled viewing experience.”
