It’s not often that we get to see a promising piece of technology that holds the potential to change people’s lives, and the Humane AI Pin is one such example. Humane says that the AI Pin, a wearable device, harnesses the full power of artificial intelligence in an entirely new, conversational, and screenless form factor. In 2023, a regular internet user might have heard about ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that talks as if it has a mind. It can answer queries, explain concepts, and has a dozen other conversational attributes. However, we still need a screen to interact with it, at least in its basic form.

What Is Humane AI Pin?

Humane has created a screenless yet interactive device that communicates with users via sound and lights. It’s a hybrid of a voice-powered search engine, a mini-projector that relays outputs based on users’ queries or requests, and a camera that can see and recognize things in the real world. However, it has a touch-sensitive area for manual activation instead of voice assistants that rely on an activation phrase. Moreover, it’s a standalone device that, along with powerful software and the internet, drives users’ AI experiences.

How Does It Work?

What Is Humane AI Pin?

The usable device is a combination of two pieces: the battery booster and the computer (which houses all the sensors and the internet modem). Both the pieces have in-built magnets that can clip on from the sides of a piece of cloth, such as a jacket or a t-shirt. Users can get more than one battery booster to get the device going for days, though the company promises one-day battery life on one complete charge.

How Can You Interact With Humane AI Pin?

There are four ways to interact with the device, including the AI-powered voice assistant. As mentioned, it doesn’t have a wake word, meaning users must tap and hold the touch-sensitive area (the second way to interact) to provide voice input. With an ultra-wide RGB camera onboard, the AI Pin can also recognize several hand gestures, such as finger pinching. Last but not least, it can also project a small laser-ink display, ideally on the user’s palm, held in front of the AI pin.

Does Humane AI Pin Provide Cellular Connection?

Humane also provides on-device network reception in collaboration with T-Mobile, one of the USA’s largest service providers. Under the hood, the device has a Snapdragon chipset for powering the AI experiences efficiently and quickly. A speaker on the device can answer queries or play music. As the input, optical, or audio sensors are active, the Trust Light indicates that it collects data. AI Pin’s operating system doesn’t host apps. Instead, it picks the right AI for particular queries, eliminating the need to search for or download apps.

What Can You Use It For?

The laser-ink projector can project a small screen on the user’s hand, displaying the time, weather, date/day, etc. What’s interesting is the device’s conversational AI has real-time access to the internet. Users can send customized messages, ask the device to read notifications, ask it to go through text messages for specific details, make a hands-free phone call, use it for live translations, scan objects like food items, and ask questions like how many calories or protein it has, and so on.

AI Pin Can Click Pictures And Record Videos

AI Pin can also act as a first-person camera to capture stills and videos to record memories. However, this ability will unlock through an OTA update that will ship soon. Along with the device, users get access to Humane.Center, a hub that allows users to monitor and manage their data. It helps users to set up the device and create a profile.

The company has also designed a couple of AI Pin accessories, including a clip that holds on larger clothing articles, a latch that enables users to wear AI Pin on lighter clothes, protective cases or Shields, and a charging case that can hold the device and refuel it more than once.
