Vodafone Idea gets rebranded as ‘Vi’; Tariffs likely to rise, signals CEO

It’s been more than two years since the Vodafone Idea merger was announced. But it’s only today that the fusion is marked official as Vi.

Yes, the Vodafone Idea MD and CEO, Mr. Ravinder Takkar revealed the new unified brand, christened — Vi (read as “We”).

If you hop over to the Vodafone Idea website, you’d be welcomed by the new brand announcement along with a redirect link to the new myvi website.

The new interface basically facilitates the usual telecom services to the customer such as recharges, pay postpaid bills, apply for a new connection, mobile portability, and international roaming.

As for existing customers of Vodafone Idea, nothing fundamentally changes. You can continue using your mobile SIM and ongoing services. However, going forward, you would be interacting with the new portal. Likewise, the Vodafone app has also been renamed and revamped into the Vi app (download for Android | iOS).

Within the app, there is a “Happy Surprise” introductory program, wherein you can win prizes every day for spotting the new Vi logo. The brand encourages the audience to try creating, downloading, and engaging with custom-made Vi tune.

Also, expect to see Vi ads on TV and digital platforms soon.

Besides all these, the brand promises better connectivity.

Possible Hike in Prices?

After the new brand revelation, in a press briefing, Mr. Takkar remarked, “Raising tariffs is important and we are never shy of doing that. We have done it in the past when industry players followed us”.

He said, “everyone is selling below cost” and a new tariff is crucial to boost the telco’s ARPU which is at Rs 114, while Airtel and Jio stand at Rs 157 and Rs 140 respectively.

Meanwhile, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group said, “The company started this journey with two extremely popular and loved brands and today we come to the final stage of integration as we announce one unified brand. In their various avatars, since the mid-90s, Vodafone and Idea steered the growth of the sector for over decades separately. Both Vodafone and Idea have set new benchmarks in network experience, rural connectivity, customer service, enterprise mobility solutions, and many more”.

As of June 2020, Vi had around 280 million subscribers in the country.
