Vivo became the first smartphone brand to sport a functional in-display fingerprint sensor. At the CES 2018 event in Las Vegas, the Chinese smartphone maker globally demonstrates its ready-to-produce smartphone with the futuristic fingerprint sensor built-in.

Vivo first presented a prototype of the in-display fingerprint scanning at an event in MWC Shanghai 2017. Today, they showcase a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone featuring an optical fingerprint sensor.

The In-display Fingerprint Sensor Technology

Vivo President, Alex Feng, says that “the new fingerprint technology is a big leap forward in bringing consumers this long-awaited, futuristic mobile experience. We are very excited to make it available to consumers soon.

Unlike the traditional sensor, the in-display sensor works right from the display. Vivo showcased it in the centre near the bottom of the screen where it will be within your thumbs’ reach. The first impression of the technology showed that the in-display fingerprint sensor has a relatively slower response time – it had an unlock time of 0.7 sec, which is like 75% slower than the capacitive sensors we see on modern smartphones.

Since it is an optical fingerprint sensor, the technology will only work with the OLED panels. All the other display like the IPS LCD won’t support the in-display fingerprint sensor, as of now.

The optical fingerprint sensor is being developed by Synaptics, who calls this new-age technology Clear ID. Apart from Vivo, the firm is working with other top-OEMs to include the Clear ID on their smartphones. The first-batch of fully running in-display fingerprint sensor phones is expected to hit retail shelves by second-half of 2018.

Vivo didn’t announce any other details of the phone, it is still a prototype. But, they made it clear that their first smartphone with in-display fingerprint sensor will be available by early 2018.

How is it going to benefit OEMs?

The optical fingerprint scanning enables the users to unlock their smartphone through one-touch fingerprint scanning directly on the smartphone display. It also solves the industrys challenge of providing a better and more convenient fingerprint authentication experience, especially in 18:9 screen phones.

With the in-display fingerprint sensor, manufacturers can again shift the fingerprint sensor on the front in spite of using near bezel-less displays that are quite a rage these days.
