Increasing electricity demand places significant pressure on finite resources and leads to higher costs per unit of energy. This scenario presents considerable difficulties for low-income and middle-class households, which find it challenging to cope with elevated electricity expenses for basic necessities. For instance, in Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s most populous states, power consumption reached 115,675,000 GWh in 2023, up from 98,730,000 GWh in 2022.

The electricity demand is projected to exceed 250,000,000 GWh in 2024 and is anticipated to rise further in 2025. Given the sharp increase in power requirements, it is crucial to transition to renewable and cleaner energy sources to alleviate the reliance on fossil fuels and address the growing energy needs of the state’s population.

During the summer months, the use of air conditioners can lead to exorbitant charges, while in winter, appliances such as geysers, immersion rods, heaters, and humidifiers further escalate these expenses. To alleviate this financial strain and promote the adoption of renewable energy, the Government of India has been advocating for solar energy as a cost-effective and readily accessible alternative.

Households in India have the opportunity to install solar panels on their rooftops as part of a government initiative, which includes a solar subsidy for participants. This article will explore the concept of solar subsidies and provide information on how residents in Uttar Pradesh can take advantage of this program.

How is India working towards adopting Cleaner Energy Resources?

  • Indian Government has been striving towards reducing subsidies in the oil and gas sector by 90% so that fossil fuel usage comes down.
  • Programs like the National Solar Mission, the National Green Hydrogen Mission, and more promote renewable and cleaner energy sources. PM-KUSUM scheme, Deendayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana, and more also come under this umbrella.
  • Encouraging electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers instead of traditional petrol or diesel-consuming vehicles.
  • Vertical axis wind turbines are being integrated into urban infrastructure and measures to adopt noise pollution.

Installing a Solar Panel for Subsidy in UP: First-Hand Experience

A relative of mine recently had a solar panel installed to take advantage of available subsidies. Residing in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, this individual followed the outlined procedures for installation. The entire process was straightforward and efficient, with government officials providing assistance at each stage. It has been approximately 2-3 years since the installation, and the experience has been very positive.

Electricity bills have decreased by about 25%, and the solar panel installer projected a return on investment within 2-4 years, after which all energy produced will be free for life, with no associated risks.

These panels are backed by a 25-year warranty, ensuring 100% efficiency during the first decade, followed by 90% efficiency in the subsequent ten years, and 80% efficiency thereafter. This investment is proving to be beneficial, not only in terms of cost savings and future electricity supply but also in contributing to a cleaner environment.
