It’s been over six years since the smartphone industry got its first foldable smartphone. Although foldables were not very well received at launch due to being fragile and having a multitude of other issues, they’ve now gotten much better and more durable than before.
Fun fact: The Royole FlexPai was the first commercially available foldable smartphone, released in November 2018 by the Chinese startup Royole.
As the industry keeps evolving, we continue to see huge innovations in the foldable segment. Chinese brands have introduced features like the water drop hinge, ultra-thin form factor, larger batteries, super-fast charging, and many more improvements to foldables.

Amidst all these innovations, we have some exciting news to share. Huawei, one of the big foldable smartphone manufacturers, is planning to release a tri-fold smartphone “soon.” The news comes from Ice Universe, a reliable leaker.
Ice stressed that Huawei will remain the only brand with a commercial tri-fold smartphone for a long time since Samsung, the only competitor with the ability to make something similar, is busy figuring out how to make its current foldables thinner.

In case you are unaware, Samsung’s foldables are some of the thickest on the market. On the contrary, Chinese manufacturers like Honor and Vivo have managed to make their foldables as thin as 9.x mm, while having a larger battery, a digitizer for stylus support, and larger camera sensors inside.
Ice adds that one of the prerequisites for a phone to triple fold is that it must be extremely thin. This is obvious since you don’t want your phone to look like a brick when you fold it to its normal size. And since Samsung is unable to make its foldables thin enough, they won’t be making a tri-fold smartphone anytime soon.

Samsung’s foldable smartphone market share is declining quickly, and even with the upcoming Z Fold6, it’s not getting thinner. Samsung also has another problem with its foldables, i.e., the aspect ratio. Ice says that even the “Z Fold6 Slim” will be thicker than the latest Chinese foldables.
As for Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone, there’s not much known about it, but you can expect the device to launch in China soon. It would be running on HarmonyOS, which will soon be completely separate from Android. What are your thoughts on this? Let us know in the comments section below.
